The Pact Magic Loop — Why Sorlock Is Uniquely Efficient

The core engine of the Sorlock build is the Pact Magic → Sorcery Points conversion loop. Warlock's Pact Magic spell slots recharge after every short rest, giving you 2-3 slots available again after a 5-minute in-game rest (of which you get two per long rest). Sorcerer's Font of Magic lets you convert any spell slot to Sorcery Points — 1 SP per slot level. A Warlock 5's Pact Magic slots are level 3, worth 3 SP each.

Here's what this looks like in practice: after every short rest, your Pact Magic slots recharge. You immediately convert them to 6 Sorcery Points (two level-3 slots × 3 SP each). You started the long rest cycle with your Sorcerer's natural SP, and now have 6 additional SP from each of your two short rests — 12 extra SP over the full rest cycle. At Sorcerer 7, you normally have 7 SP per long rest. The Warlock dip effectively triples your Metamagic budget.

This loop is the reason Sorlock outperforms a pure Sorcerer for resource efficiency. More Sorcery Points = more Quickened Spells = more turns where you fire two Eldritch Blasts or two Fireballs. In a game where difficult fights can span 6-8 turns, having three extra Quickened Spell uses per day is the difference between running dry mid-fight and finishing with points to spare.

Eldritch Blast + Invocations — Your Infinite Damage Source

Eldritch Blast is the most efficient cantrip in BG3. At level 5 it fires two beams (each dealing 1d10+CHA with Agonizing Blast), and at level 11 it fires three beams. With CHA 20 and Agonizing Blast, each beam deals 1d10+5 — averaging 10.5 per beam. Three beams average 31.5 damage per turn with no spell slot cost. This is consistently competitive with Fireball at level 5.

Repelling Blast pushes hit targets back 4.5 meters. This is powerful for: throwing enemies off ledges (dealing fall damage, often lethal on high drops), keeping melee enemies away from your squishy backline, repositioning bosses into Hypnotic Pattern or Black Tentacles zones, and bouncing enemies off walls for environmental damage. You can select both Agonizing Blast and Repelling Blast, and both apply on each beam hit.

Devil's Sight (another Invocation option) grants darkvision 24 meters and, crucially, you can see normally in magical darkness that you or your party creates. If you cast Darkness (a 2nd-level Warlock spell), you and your Familiar can see through it while your enemies cannot — effectively giving you permanent Advantage on all attacks while completely Blinded enemies have Disadvantage on their attacks against you. This is an incredibly powerful defensive combo for the Warlock portion.

Fiend Warlock — The Best Subclass for Sorlock

Fiend Warlock is the most damage-focused Warlock subclass and the best choice for Sorlock. Its key feature, Dark One's Blessing, grants temporary HP equal to CHA + Warlock level whenever you kill a creature. In a typical fight against multiple enemies, this fires constantly, keeping your HP topped up without spending healing resources. At CHA 20 + Warlock 5, you gain 25 temp HP per kill — often more than your max HP.

The Fiend spell list adds Fireball and Wall of Fire to your Warlock spells, which you can prepare alongside your Sorcerer spells. This broadens your offensive toolkit significantly and ensures you're never spell-slot-starved for quality damage options. Hunger of Hadar (Warlock-exclusive, creates a zone of magical darkness with periodic cold and acid damage) is also an exceptional zone-control spell that pairs beautifully with Devil's Sight.

The Great Old One Warlock subclass is the roleplay-flavored alternative, granting telepathy and some unique dialogue options in BG3. Mechanically it's weaker for the Sorlock build. Can I play Sorlock with a companion instead of a custom character?

Yes, though neither Gale (Wizard) nor Wyll (Warlock) is set up for Sorlock by default. You can respec Wyll at Withers into a Warlock/Sorcerer multiclass. Alternatively, build a custom character Sorlock from level 1 for the cleanest experience — the class order matters, as starting Warlock gives you early Pact Magic access while the Sorcerer levels fill in Metamagic and better spell slots.

What race is best for a Sorlock?

In practice: Quickened Fireball (bonus action) + Eldritch Blast (action, cantrip) is the standard combo. Two Fireballs per turn would require exploiting specific item interactions. Eldritch Blast being a cantrip is why it pairs so perfectly with Quickened Spell.

What level should I start taking Sorcerer levels?

Most players recommend taking Warlock levels first to lock in Eldritch Blast proficiency, Invocations, and Pact Magic.
