B-Tier Subclasses (Situational)

SubclassClassWhy B-Tier

Knowledge DomainClericSkill bonus features, no combat impact. Roleplay-focused
Nature DomainClericDruid spell access but limited. Overlaps with Druid better picks
Circle of SporesDruidSymbiotic Entity 4d4 temp HP + necrotic damage. Strong with Tavern Brawler Monk dip
Arcane TricksterRogueWizard spells on a Rogue body. Marginal — Eldritch Knight better for martial-spell hybrid
Way of the Four ElementsMonkSpell-like abilities cost too much Ki. Avoid unless theme priority

Wild MagicSorcererWild Magic Surge can backfire. Fun for chaos runs, weak for optimized play
The ArchfeyWarlockFey Presence Frighten/Charm AoE. Action-cost feature competes with EB
Lolth-Sworn DrowDrow SubraceBonus equipment in Underdark. Minor
College of ValourBardCombat-Inspiration Bardic die can be spent on attack rolls or damage rolls but doesn't grant Extra Attack like Sword Bard

C-Tier Subclasses (Skip Unless Themed)

SubclassClassWhy C-Tier
Trickery DomainClericInvoke Duplicity doesn't work as intended. Skip — respec Shadowheart immediately
DevotionPaladinSacred Weapon CHA-to-hit is bypassed by Pact of the Blade and similar features
School of TransmutationWizardTransmuter's Stone is useful but the rest of the kit is mediocre
School of EnchantmentWizardHypnotic Gaze single-target charm. Outclassed by Hypnotic Pattern from any school

Subclass Selection Methodology

This tier list ranks subclasses on three axes: damage per long rest, party utility, and Honour Mode safety. Subclasses that score highly on all three are S-tier. Subclasses that excel on one axis but fail others are A-tier. Niche or themed subclasses with limited optimization value are B/C tier.

The most important variable in subclass selection is your character's primary role. A frontline tank Barbarian benefits from Wildheart Bear Totem (resistance) more than Berserker Frenzy (damage). A blaster Wizard benefits from Evocation Sculpt Spells more than Divination Portent. A controller Druid benefits from Land more than Moon. The tier rankings assume you're optimizing for the role most associated with each class — but if your build deviates, the tier may shift.

Honour Mode is its own consideration. Subclasses that excel at preventing damage (Light Cleric Warding Flare, Oath of the Ancients Aura of Warding, Wildheart Bear Totem) gain a tier in Honour Mode rankings. Subclasses that excel at burst damage (Berserker Frenzy, Vengeance Paladin Smite) maintain their tier because they end fights before damage matters. Subclasses with weak defensive features (Open Hand Monk, Sword Bard, Storm Sorcerer) drop a tier in Honour Mode.

Multiclass synergy is the fourth axis. A subclass that pairs perfectly with another class climbs in priority for optimization-focused builds. Sword Bard 6 + Vengeance Paladin 6 is the meta-defining Bardadin combo. Vengeance Paladin 6 + Fiend Warlock 6 is Lockadin. Tempest Cleric 2 + Storm Sorcerer 10 is the lightning nuke. Subclasses that unlock these multiclass combos benefit from synergy rankings.

  • Karlach: Berserker Barbarian (default) — keep it. Wildheart Bear Totem for Honour Mode survival.
  • Lae'zel: Battle Master Fighter (respec from default) — Trip Attack, Riposte, Action Surge.
  • Shadowheart: Light Cleric (respec from default Trickery) — Warding Flare + Fireball.
  • Gale: Evocation Wizard (default) — keep it. Sculpt Spells is mandatory for Fireball positioning.
  • Astarion: Assassin Rogue (default) or Thief if you want him to dual-wield with Fast Hands.
  • Wyll: Sorcerer 7 / Warlock 5 Sorlock multiclass (respec from default Fiend Warlock).
  • Minsc: Battle Master or Hunter Ranger — flexible respec depending on party need.
  • Halsin: Moon Druid (default) — keep it. Owlbear form is a top-tier tank body.
  • Jaheira: Spores Druid (default) — keep it. Symbiotic Entity is excellent for a melee Druid.
  • Minthara: Vengeance Paladin (default) — keep it. Strongest individual front-liner.

Common Subclass Mistakes

Picking Four Elements Monk because it sounds cool: Four Elements requires Ki for every spell-like ability AND costs Ki for the standard Monk features (Flurry, Step of the Wind, Patient Defense). At Monk 5 you have 5 Ki points — barely enough to use one Four Elements ability per fight. Open Hand Monk uses Ki only for Flurry and Stunning Strike, leaving more Ki for sustained damage.

Picking Devotion Paladin for the 'classic Paladin' aesthetic: Devotion's Sacred Weapon (+CHA to attack rolls for 1 minute, Channel Divinity) is mechanically replaced by Pact of the Blade or Magic Weapon spell. Vengeance gets the best spell list. Ancients gets the best aura. Devotion's strength is purely theme.

Picking Wild Magic Sorcerer for the chaos meme: Wild Magic Surge can summon enemies, swap your spell slots randomly, or polymorph you into a sheep. Funny for casual runs, terrible for optimization. If you want chaos, embrace it. If you want optimization, pick Draconic or Storm.

Picking Beast Master Ranger expecting a strong companion: BG3's Beast Master companion (Ranger summon) doesn't scale with character level beyond the initial summon. It hits like a level 2 enemy for the entire game. Hunter Ranger's Colossus Slayer (+1d8 damage to wounded enemies) is a guaranteed damage boost; Beast Master's companion is unreliable.

Picking Trickery Cleric on Shadowheart and not respeccing: Trickery is the weakest Cleric subclass. Invoke Duplicity doesn't generate flanking Advantage. Pass Without Trace is useful but is also on Druid and Ranger spell lists. Respec to Light or Life immediately.

Picking College of Valour Bard expecting Sword Bard synergy: Valour grants Combat Inspiration (Bardic die can be spent on attack rolls or damage rolls), but doesn't grant Extra Attack until Bard 6 (still 1 attack per Action without Sword's Flourish). Sword Bard 3 is the meta — Valour is mechanically weaker.

Top S-Tier Picks vs. Their Closest A-Tier Alternative

S-Tier PickA-Tier AlternativeWhy S Wins
Berserker BarbarianWildheart Bear TotemFrenzy = +1 attack per turn. ~30% more damage. Bear Totem catches up on Honour Mode
Sword BardLore BardSlashing Flourish granting 2 attacks per Action. Lore wins for Magical Secrets, loses for damage
Light ClericTempest ClericWarding Flare reaction defense + Fireball. Tempest's Destructive Wrath requires lightning damage build
Battle Master FighterChampion FighterManeuver dice = tactical flexibility. Champion's crit range is simpler but doesn't compete
Open Hand MonkShadow MonkTopple Flurry + Stunning Strike control. Shadow Monk's invisibility is utility, not damage
Vengeance PaladinAncients PaladinHunter's Mark + Misty Step + Hold Person spell list. Ancients wins for Honour Mode aura but Vengeance wins damage
Gloomstalker RangerHunter RangerSurprise round attack with bonus damage. Hunter's Colossus Slayer is consistent but less burst
Thief RogueAssassin RogueFast Hands second Bonus Action unlocks Throwzerker. Assassin's Surprise crit is single-burst
Draconic SorcererStorm SorcererFree AC boost + elemental damage. Storm's flight is cosmetic in BG3
Fiend WarlockGreat Old One WarlockDark One's Blessing sustain. GOO's Awakened Mind is utility-only
Evocation WizardNecromancy WizardSculpt Spells protects allies from Fireball. Necromancy's undead army is fun but distracts

Verdict: S-tier picks are optimal for damage, party utility, or build synergy. A-tier picks are situationally better for specific playstyles (Wildheart for Honour tank, Hunter for sustained damage, Necromancy for summon RP). Default to S-tier unless your build has a specific reason to deviate.

Honour Mode Subclass Adjustments

SubclassStandard TierHonour Mode TierReason
Wildheart BearA-tierS-tierAll-damage-type resistance prevents most one-shot wipes
Light ClericS-tierS-tier (highest)Warding Flare reaction = best defensive feature in Honour
Oath of Ancients PaladinA-tierS-tierAura of Warding spell-damage resistance saves lives
Lore BardS-tierS-tier (highest)Magical Secrets + Cutting Words = damage prevention + utility
Open Hand MonkS-tierA-tierLow AC + Stunning Strike DC challenges in Honour
Berserker BarbarianS-tierA-tierFrenzy damage still strong, but Bear Totem's safety often wins
Storm SorcererA-tierB-tierGlass cannon. Hard to keep alive without good positioning
Wild Magic SorcererB-tierC-tierChaotic surges can wipe own party — too risky for Honour

Verdict: Honour Mode rewards defensive subclasses. Light Cleric, Lore Bard, Oath of Ancients Paladin, and Wildheart Bear Totem are the top 4 Honour picks. High-damage glass cannon subclasses drop in priority because surviving 100% of fights matters more than dealing 20% more damage in survived fights.

Frequently asked questions

Which subclass should I pick for my first BG3 playthrough?

For first-time players, Battle Master Fighter, Vengeance Paladin, or Light Cleric are the most forgiving picks. Battle Master has clear damage rotation (attack + maneuver) without resource management complexity. Vengeance Paladin has the strongest spell list and Aura of Protection. Light Cleric has the easiest reactive defense (Warding Flare) plus damage and healing in one kit. All three are top-tier subclasses that scale well across all three acts without requiring optimization knowledge.

Is there ever a reason to pick a C-tier subclass?

Yes, for theme. If you want to play a 'classic Paladin' archetype, Devotion captures it best despite being mechanically weaker than Vengeance. If you want a chaos magic theme, Wild Magic Sorcerer is the only option. If you want a 'trickster cleric' character, Trickery is the thematic pick. BG3 is playable on Balanced difficulty with any subclass. The tier list is a guideline for optimization, not a mandate. If a C-tier subclass fits your character's story, take it — the difficulty difference is manageable on Tactician and below.

What's the single best subclass in BG3?

College of Lore Bard is widely considered the single most powerful subclass in BG3 because Magical Secrets (at Bard 6) unlocks access to any spell from any class — including Counterspell, Spirit Guardians, Fireball, Haste, and Hypnotic Pattern. A Lore Bard 10 / Vengeance Paladin 2 multiclass gets all of these spells plus Divine Smite, Aura of Protection, heavy armor, and Bardic Inspiration. It is the highest-floor build in the game and the most popular Honour Mode pick. If you can only learn one subclass thoroughly, learn College of Lore.

Does subclass choice matter as much as class choice?

Yes — sometimes more. Two Barbarians with different subclasses (Berserker vs Wildheart Bear) play very differently: Berserker is a damage glass cannon; Wildheart Bear is an immortal tank. Two Wizards with different subclasses (Evocation vs Necromancy) play differently: Evocation is a Fireball-blaster; Necromancy is a summoner. Class determines your core mechanics (spell slots, attack progression, HP die); subclass determines your role within those mechanics. Subclass choice can change your build identity entirely.

Can I change subclass mid-run?

Yes, via Withers respec (100 gold). Subclass change is a respec of your entire class — you re-allocate stats, re-pick all class features, and re-prepare spells. You cannot 'just' swap subclass without respeccing the class. The respec is reversible at any time, so feel free to experiment. The 100 gold cost is trivial by mid-Act 1, and is the best gold sink in the game for optimization.

Why is Trickery Cleric so bad?

Trickery Cleric in BG3 has three issues. (1) Invoke Duplicity creates an illusory duplicate that doesn't grant flanking Advantage as in tabletop D&D 5e — the duplicate is purely cosmetic in combat. (2) Blessing of the Trickster (Advantage on Stealth for allies) is a 10-minute buff but stealth checks are rare in combat. (3) Trickery's bonus spell list (Charm Person, Disguise Self, Mirror Image, Polymorph) overlaps heavily with party Wizards/Bards, so the spell list adds little unique value. Light and Life Clerics provide much more meaningful contributions to a party.

Is Way of the Four Elements Monk really that weak?

Yes. Four Elements uses Ki for every spell-like ability AND for standard Monk features (Flurry of Blows, Step of the Wind, Patient Defense). At Monk 5 you have 5 Ki points per short rest — enough for either one Four Elements ability (Fist of Unbroken Air = 2 Ki) or two Flurries of Blows. Choosing between them forces a damage-vs-utility trade every turn that pure Open Hand Monks don't face. Plus, Four Elements abilities aren't particularly strong even when cast — they compete with cantrips from any other caster. Skip Four Elements unless you're roleplaying an Avatar: The Last Airbender pastiche.

What's the best multiclass-friendly subclass for each role?

Tank: Berserker Barbarian 5 / Thief Rogue 4 / Champion Fighter 3 (Throwzerker). Damage: Sword Bard 6 / Vengeance Paladin 6 (Bardadin). Caster: Tempest Cleric 2 / Storm Sorcerer 10 (Tempest Sorc). Healer: Life Cleric 12 (pure — multiclass rarely helps a pure healer). Skirmisher: Gloomstalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 4 / Battle Master Fighter 3 (the meta sniper build). Each combines a level-3 subclass power with a level-5 multiclass power for compounding effects.
