The Tiefling Party — The First Romance Trigger

The Tiefling Party (also called the 'Tiefling Refugee Celebration') is the social event at the end of Act 1, triggered after you rescue the tieflings from the Goblin Camp threat. Every romanceable origin companion has a 'first night' scene available at this party — Astarion, Shadowheart, Lae'zel, Gale, Wyll, Karlach, and a possible Halsin appearance.

Approval gating: each companion needs ~40+ approval (out of ~100 baseline) to unlock their first scene. Hit this by making decisions they like throughout Act 1 — Astarion appreciates self-interest and dark humor, Shadowheart likes Shar-aligned choices and mystery, Lae'zel respects strength and Gith loyalty, Gale enjoys curiosity and magic theorism, Wyll likes heroism, Karlach loves justice and protecting the underdog.

Strategic tip: pick ONE companion to romance early. Multi-romancing in Act 1 (sleeping with both Shadowheart and Lae'zel, for instance) does NOT lock all paths — it can trigger jealousy events later that close some romance routes. Confirm with one companion at the tiefling party, then progress that romance through Acts 2 and 3 for the deepest content.

Astarion — The Most Dramatic Romance Arc

Astarion's romance is the most narratively complex in BG3. His backstory involves 200 years of vampire-thrall servitude under Cazador, and the relationship arc forces choices about whether to support his vampire-ascension ritual (the 'Dark Urge' alternative) or guide him toward becoming a Spawn-freer healer.

Approval milestones: Help him with the Goblin questline, side with his self-interest in dialogue choices, support his hedonism early. The Act 1 first-scene is straightforward (high approval at tiefling party). Act 2 deepens with his vampire family history quest. Act 3 brings the climactic Cazador Palace ritual — siding 'with Astarion' (ascending) gives the dark ending; siding 'against' (freeing the spawn) gives the romantic, redemptive ending.

Ending variants: Ascended Astarion becomes a Vampire Ascendant (powerful, immortal, but emotionally damaged). Spawn Astarion accepts mortality and stays in Baldur's Gate (the romantic ending, considered the 'good' path by most players). Choose Spawn for the warmest romance ending; Ascended for the morally complex one.

Shadowheart — The Most Underrated Companion Arc

Shadowheart's romance involves her crisis of faith — she's a cleric of Shar (the Dark Lady) but her past contains hidden memories from her Selûnite parents. The romance arc culminates in Act 2 (the House of Grief / Nightsong reveal) and Act 3 (the Selunite vs Sharran decision).

Approval choices: support her early Shar devotion in Act 1 (helps reach tiefling party first scene), then in Act 2 the Nightsong moment is pivotal — choose to spare Nightsong instead of killing her per Shar's command. This unlocks Shadowheart's path toward Selûne worship and opens the deeper romance scenes. In Act 3, completing the House of Grief Mother Superior fight finalizes her arc.

Endings: Selunite Shadowheart (chose to spare Nightsong) gets a hopeful epilogue with her birth parents in Baldur's Gate. Sharran Shadowheart (chose to kill Nightsong, completing the dark ritual) gets a darker ending with darker dialogue post-game. Both arcs are well-written; pick based on the tone you prefer.

Villainous powerMintharaGoblin Camp ally route only, dark commander romance

Verdict: Pick based on your character's vibe and tone preference. All romance arcs have at least 8 hours of dialogue and unique scenes. Try Astarion or Shadowheart for first playthroughs (most polished arcs); Wyll or Karlach for second (emotionally rewarding).

Karlach — The Emotionally Most Intense Romance

Karlach is the Tiefling Barbarian with the Hellrider's engine in her chest — she's dying slowly because the engine eventually fails. The romance arc centers around fixing or accepting this. Act 1: meet her on Risen Road, complete her Anders quest (Sword of Justice / Karlach defense). Act 2: confess feelings at tiefling party, then save Karlach's friends at Last Light Inn. Act 3: the climactic 'engine repair' arc in Baldur's Gate with Dammon (the blacksmith).

The Karlach romance has the most emotionally heavy endings of any in BG3. Spoiler-tier: depending on Acts 2 and 3 choices, Karlach can either die in Avernus (the engine fails), become an angel-paladin equivalent (a rare path requiring specific Mizora-bargain choices), or live on (the 'happy ending' requiring specific Wyll-cooperation choices).

Why Karlach is widely beloved: her optimism contrasts the darkness of other companions. Romancing her is BG3 fans' most-recommended emotional experience. Multiple playthroughs often save Karlach for one specifically — and her good ending is the most satisfying narrative in the game.

Romance Mistakes That Will Break Your Path

  • Don't reject the first scene at the tiefling party. Saying 'no' or 'not yet' to a companion's tiefling-party invitation closes their first-scene window. Some romances re-open with later approval gains; others permanently lock.
  • Don't multi-romance casually. Sleeping with Astarion and then later confessing feelings to Shadowheart triggers a jealousy event. Astarion is generally permissive (poly-friendly), but Shadowheart and Lae'zel can break off if you've been with others without a 'group conversation' resolution.
  • Don't ignore the 'commit to one' dialogue. In Act 2, your chosen romance asks for exclusivity in a key conversation. Saying 'yes' locks the arc; saying 'no' breaks it. Choose carefully and commit.
  • Don't kill any companion you've romanced. Doing the 'kill the companion' Dark Urge choice ends the romance immediately and brings the corpse to camp as a permanent reminder. The companion does not come back via Withers.
  • Don't help Mizora finalize Wyll's contract while romancing him. Choosing to extend Wyll's infernal contract for power locks his romance into the darker ending and forecloses the 'Karlach + Wyll friendship' beat.
  • Avoid the Crown of Madness in romanced characters. Some boss encounters cast Crown of Madness on romanced companions — if they kill another party member while charmed, the relationship damages.
  • Don't bring Halsin or Minthara to camp before completing their initial scenes. They can have unintended interactions with existing romances. Settle one path before recruiting them.
  • Don't pursue Mizora as a 'romance' — she's a one-night-only scene at her Act 2 cutscene. There's no long-term Mizora romance arc. Same with Haarlep at House of Hope.

Polyamory and Multi-Partner Romance

Halsin is the most polyamory-friendly companion — he encourages and supports a 'group conversation' in which you can openly maintain a primary romance (e.g., Karlach) AND a secondary scene with Halsin. Karlach is also generally OK with the polyamory conversation if presented correctly. This is the 'open relationship' configuration that BG3 supports explicitly.

Astarion is somewhat permissive (he won't 'jealousy-break-up' if you're with another partner) but won't actively engage in poly arrangements either. Shadowheart and Lae'zel are strictly monogamous — they'll break off the romance if you maintain a second partner.

The 'all-six-origin-companions polycule' meme is technically achievable through multiple group conversations but requires specific dialogue picks across all six conversations. The game supports the configuration but doesn't write specific scenes for it — most poly content is generic 'happy with everyone' dialogue.

Frequently asked questions

Can I romance multiple companions at once?

Partially. Halsin actively supports polyamory and encourages 'group conversation' setups with one primary partner. Astarion is permissive but not actively poly. Shadowheart and Lae'zel are monogamous — they break off if you maintain a second relationship. To safely poly: lock in one primary (Karlach, for instance) and use the 'open relationship' conversation with Halsin.

Does my class affect romance options?

No — every class can romance every companion. Race can affect specific dialogue (a Drow character has unique Astarion lines; a Gith character unlocks Lae'zel-specific dialogue). Background (Outlander, Soldier, Sage, Acolyte, etc.) flavors some scenes. But the romance availability is class-agnostic.

Can I romance Minthara as a 'good' character?

Minthara romance requires the Goblin Camp ally route (siding with goblins against the tieflings in Act 1). If you've already saved the tieflings, Minthara is hostile and the romance is locked out. There is a recent patch (post-Patch 7) that allows Minthara recruitment in 'normal' (tiefling-saved) playthroughs via a specific Mountain Pass questline, but the romance is harder to unlock and her early-Act-2 dialogue is friendlier in this configuration.

What approval level do I need before the tiefling party?

~40 approval (out of ~100 baseline). Track approval via the companion sheet — it shows 'low / medium / high' tiers. Hit at least 'medium' approval (40+) before the tiefling party to unlock the first scene. If you've reached high approval (70+) the conversation is more romantic and personal. Below 40, the companion will rebuff your invitation.

Is the Astarion 'Ascended' ending bad?

Ascended Astarion (where you support his vampire ascension at Cazador Palace) gives a darker, morally complex ending. He becomes a powerful Vampire Ascendant but loses some emotional warmth. Spawn Astarion (where you free the spawn instead) is the redemption arc and the most player-recommended ending. Neither is 'wrong' — Ascended fits if you want a dark fantasy ending, Spawn fits if you want the warm romantic ending.

Can my romance partner die in the final battle?

Yes — companions can die in the Netherbrain final battle if you fail to keep them alive. Resurrection at Withers works (200 gold per resurrection in Tactician+). However, if your romance partner dies in the final ending sequence and you don't revive before the final cutscene, the ending diverges to a 'they died protecting you' variant. Save scumming or healing during the final fight is critical for the canonical romance ending.

What happens with Mizora and Haarlep?

Mizora is Wyll's patron and offers a one-night scene at the end of Act 2 if you choose to take her offer. There's no long-term Mizora romance arc — it's a single intimate scene with no further commitment. Haarlep is Raphael's incubus in House of Hope (Act 3) — you can have a one-time scene there as well. Both are 'fling' encounters, not relationships.

Can I break up with my romance partner mid-playthrough?

Yes — most companions have 'I think we should be friends' dialogue available in camp conversations. Initiating a breakup ends the romance immediately. The companion remains in your party (not removed). Note: some companions (especially Lae'zel and Astarion) have a 'cold' phase after breakup where their dialogue becomes more curt for several long rests.
