Base Placement Strategy
Location matters more than most new players realize. The ideal early base location has: flat terrain (reduces Pal pathing issues dramatically), nearby trees and rocks for initial resource gathering, no enemy camp within 50 meters (enemy raids scale with base level and can overwhelm an unprepared base), and access to ore deposits for metal ingot production.
A second base (unlocked later via Technology) should be placed specifically near high concentrations of a resource you need in bulk — ore nodes for metal ingots, or a flat area ideal for a large farming operation. Specializing your second base removes the pressure of trying to do everything from one location. Your first base handles crafting and food; your second base handles resource extraction.
As your base levels up, its defense rating increases and you'll face increasingly difficult raids. Place defensive walls and turrets (unlocked in the Technology Tree) around the perimeter. Assign Pals with Combat suitability near the base entrance — they'll fight intruders automatically. A raid that destroys your Furnace or Feed Box can cripple production for hours.
Optimal Base Layout by Zone
The most efficient base layout divides into three main zones. The Food Zone: place the Berry Plantation, Wheat Plantation (mid-game), and Feed Box in the same area. Planting Pals work the plants, Gathering Pals collect harvests, and the Feed Box is nearby so Pals don't travel far to eat after finishing farm work. Cookpot should be adjacent to both food storage and the Feed Box.
The Resource Zone is where Logging Sites, Stone Pits, and Ore Mining Sites go. These should be near natural resource spawns — your Logging Site should be within reach of trees, your Stone Pit near rock formations. Pals with Lumbering and Mining suitabilities stay in this zone permanently. Place a Chest here to automatically collect gathered materials before they overflow.
The Crafting Zone contains the Workbench, Furnace, Gear Workshop, and Assembly Line. This zone processes raw materials into finished goods. Flow should go: Resource Zone output → Chest storage → Crafting Zone input. The Furnace processes ore into ingots; the Workbench crafts tools and sphere components; the Gear Workshop assembles finished equipment. Place all Kindling and Handiwork Pals here.
Automated Production Chain — Metal Ingots to Weapons
- Location
- Crafting Zone, Base
- Start point
- Ore node mining via Mining Pals at Stone Pit / Ore Mining Site
- Yield
- 20–40 Metal Ingots per hour with proper Pal staffing
Steps
- Assign 2–3 Pals with Mining Level 2+ to the Ore Mining Site or Stone Pit near ore deposits.
- Place a Chest adjacent to the mining station — Transporting Pals carry ore from station to chest automatically.
- Assign 1–2 Pals with Kindling Level 2+ to the Furnace. Ore in nearby chests gets fed into the Furnace automatically.
- Furnace converts ore batches into Metal Ingots — Kindling Pals maintain the fire while the Furnace processes.
- Assign Handiwork Pals to the Weapon Workbench or Assembly Line to convert Metal Ingots into finished weapons/armor.
- Completed items appear in output chests automatically — collect periodically or set Transporting Pals to move them to main storage.
Tips
- The more Pals in the chain, the faster the throughput — bottlenecks usually happen at the Furnace.
- Higher Kindling Pals (Level 3+) dramatically increase Furnace speed — upgrade from Foxparks to Kitsun or Pyrin.
- Conveyor belts (unlocked in Technology Tree) automate item movement between stations entirely.
Early vs Mid vs Late Base Setup
| Stage | Key Stations | Pal Count | Automation Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early Base (Level 1–5) | Palbox, Campfire, Berry Plantation, Feed Box, Primitive Workbench | 5–8 Pals | Semi-manual — some automation with Kindling/Planting Pals |
| Mid Base (Level 5–12) | + Furnace, Stone Pit, Logging Site, Gear Workshop, Cookpot | 8–14 Pals | Mostly automated with dedicated role Pals |
| Late Base (Level 12–20) | + Assembly Line, Conveyor Belts, Ore Mining Sites, Sphere Assembly | 14–20 Pals | Fully automated production chains |
| Specialized Second Base | Focus on one resource type: all Ore Mining or all Farming | 5–15 Pals | Highly efficient single-output production |
Verdict: The biggest productivity jumps come from adding Conveyors (eliminates manual item movement) and upgrading to Level 3+ Kindling Pals at the Furnace. Plan your base to accommodate these upgrades from the start rather than redesigning later.
Pal Box Capacity Expansion Tips
- Gain base EXP by catching Pals, crafting items, building structures, completing missions, and defeating bosses.
- Each base levels up independently — your second base may level slower if you're not actively building there.
- You can have up to 3 bases simultaneously (Technology unlock required for 2nd and 3rd).
- Pals stored in the Palbox but not assigned to a base station count toward your Palbox roster but not the base workforce cap.
- Condensing Pals (using multiple copies to power up one) doesn't increase base capacity but improves individual Pal performance.
- Consider rotating Pals in and out of the base for rest — overworked Pals lose Sanity and efficiency. Keep spare Pals in Palbox reserve.
Common Base Building Mistakes
- Placing the Feed Box too far from work stations — Pals waste working hours traveling to eat.
- Not having enough Transporting Pals — materials pile up at gathering stations with no one to move them.
- Building on sloped terrain — Pals struggle to path on slopes, creating work assignment failures.
- Ignoring Pal beds — sleeping Pals can't work. More beds means Pals recover faster and return to work sooner.
- Placing defensive structures inside the production area — turrets and walls should form a perimeter, not obstruct internal movement.
- Not upgrading Pals at bottleneck stations — a Level 1 Kindling Pal at the Furnace is the most common production bottleneck. Replace with Level 3+ Kindling Pal ASAP.
Frequently asked questions
How many bases can I have in Palworld?
You can have up to 3 bases simultaneously. The second and third base slots unlock through the Technology Tree at higher player levels. Each base is separate with its own Pal workforce and level progression.
How do I increase my base Pal capacity?
Level up your base by gaining base EXP (through building, crafting, and catching Pals). Each base level increases the maximum assigned Pal count. Level 20 base allows 20 Pals.
What is the best base layout for automation?
Divide into three zones: Food Zone (Plantation + Feed Box + Cookpot), Resource Zone (Logging Site + Stone Pit + Ore Sites), and Crafting Zone (Workbench + Furnace + Assembly). Keep pathways clear and the Feed Box centrally accessible.
How do conveyors work in Palworld?
Conveyors (unlocked in the Technology Tree) automatically move items between connected stations without needing a Transport Pal. Place conveyor belts between the Ore Mining Site output and Furnace input to create a fully automated smelting chain.
Why are my Pals not working at stations?
Common reasons: Pal doesn't have the right Work Suitability for that station, Pal is hungry or sleeping, Pal's Sanity is too low, or the Pal is assigned to a different station. Check each Pal's assignment in the Palbox interface and ensure their suitability matches the station.
