The Currency Hierarchy — What's Actually Valuable

In Path of Exile 2, the Divine Orb has replaced the Chaos Orb as the de-facto trade standard. Almost all high-value items are priced in Divine Orbs (abbreviated as 'div' in trade chat and on poe2.trade). This shift happened because Divine Orbs affect the actual numeric rolls on already-crafted rare and unique items, making them extremely useful for perfecting gear. A well-rolled item with top-tier numeric values can be worth tens of Divine Orbs.

Exalted Orbs occupy the next tier down. They add a random modifier to a rare item that already has mods, which is useful when you have crafted a near-perfect base and want to push it toward six affixes. Because the mod added is random, Exalted Orbs are consumed speculatively—they might add a useless mod, so their value is lower than Divines. In the current PoE 2 economy, roughly 2–5 Exalted Orbs trade for one Divine Orb depending on the league stage.

At the bottom of the hierarchy sit Transmutation Orbs, Augmentation Orbs, and Orbs of Scouring. These are used in bulk during casual crafting but have virtually no trade value individually. The exception is Alteration Orbs, which see mild trade demand when players are spam-crafting magic items for specific modifiers on boots or flasks.

How to Trade on poe2.trade

poe2.trade is the official third-party trade site endorsed by Grinding Gear Games for Path of Exile 2. To sell items, list them in your public stash tab by right-clicking the stash tab name, setting it to 'Public', and then pricing each item individually by right-clicking it and selecting 'Price Item'. Your listings appear on poe2.trade within a few minutes and other players can whisper you with the auto-generated trade message to buy.

When buying, use poe2.trade's filter system to narrow down items by stat type, minimum values, item level, and price range. Always check how many identical listings exist before buying—if 50 players are selling the same item at wildly different prices, you can find underpriced options. Sort by price ascending but exclude the cheapest 10% of listings, as those are often bait listings with hidden flaws (corrupted, wrong socket color) or simply stale.

Patience is the most underrated trade skill. Items listed 10% above market price often sell within hours as demand fluctuates. Undercutting by large amounts trains buyers to expect lower prices and devalues items for everyone. Price-check your items on poe2.trade before vendoring anything rare—a ring you think is worthless might have a combination of mods that players are actively seeking.

Best Practices for Currency Management

• Use Orbs of Alteration on magic flasks and boots to fish for good suffixes before Regaling to rare.
• Save Exalted Orbs for items you plan to keep long-term — the random mod add is wasted on gear you will replace soon.
• Divine Orbs are best used on items you plan to trade, not on self-use gear unless the numeric roll matters significantly.
• Vaal Orbs can brick or bless items — use them on items you do not need to trade, since Vaal-corrupted items cannot be modified further.
• Gemcutter's Prisms (GCPs) are best spent on 20/0 gems to bring them to 20/20; a 20/20 gem sells for significantly more than a 20/0.
• Chaos Orbs are less relevant in PoE 2 but still useful for rerolling rare items during campaign crafting.

Currency Farming — Where Orbs Come From

Currency in PoE 2 drops from any enemy, chest, or breakable object in the game world. However, certain strategies dramatically improve currency yield. Running high-tier maps (T14–T15) with increased Item Quantity and Rarity modifiers generates more drops per hour. Breach encounters are particularly good because the dense spawn rates produce high volumes of currency alongside Breach-specific splinters.

Ritual altars in maps allow you to spend accumulated Tribute points on currency directly from the Ritual shop. Farming Ritual-heavy Atlas passive setups ensures a steady stream of Divines and Exalteds from the shop rerolls. Additionally, vendor recipes—specific combinations of items sold simultaneously—generate targeted currency. The most notable is the full rare item set recipe (two rings, amulet, helmet, body, gloves, boots, belt, and a weapon plus off-hand all in one sell), which yields Chaos Orbs when the items are unidentified.

Safe Vendor Recipes — Currency from Items

Several vendor recipes in PoE 2 produce targeted currency from items you would otherwise discard. The most reliable is the Chromatic Orb recipe — sell any rare item with a Red-Green-Blue linked socket to any vendor for one Chromatic Orb. Use this to convert otherwise-vendor-junk gear with awkward socket colors into a reliable trickle of Chromatics.

The Gemcutter's Prism recipe trades a 20% quality gem (any gem type) for one Gemcutter's Prism. This is the foundation of the gem-leveling income strategy — quality up your gems to 20%, sell them to the vendor, and receive a GCP to start the next gem.

The full rare item set recipe (sell one rare item from each of nine equipment slots simultaneously) yields one Chaos Orb if all items are unidentified, or one Scroll of Wisdom each if identified. Higher-tier sets (all items with item level 60+) yield two Chaos Orbs. This is the cornerstone of campaign currency income — every rare item you don't need contributes to a future Chaos Orb.

The 20% quality flask recipe (sell any flask + 20 Glassblower's Baubles) creates a 20% quality flask, which is significantly more efficient than crafting individually. Always use this recipe instead of applying Baubles one at a time when your goal is a 20% quality flask.
