Why You Need a Generator
Project Zomboid simulates a real apocalypse timeline — after roughly two weeks (default sandbox setting), the power grid fails permanently. Without electricity, refrigerators stop preserving food (stored food spoils faster), stoves and electric ovens stop working, lights go out, and any electronic entertainment becomes unavailable. The transition from powered to unpowered survival is one of the most significant challenge escalations in the game.
A generator restores electricity to any building it is connected to, powering all standard electric appliances: refrigerators, ovens, televisions, lights, and medical equipment. For long-term survivors who rely on refrigerated food, working stoves for cooking, and occasional television watching to reduce Boredom moodles, a generator is not optional — it is essential infrastructure.
The tradeoff is fuel. Generators consume petrol continuously while running. As gas stations drain over months of in-game time, fuel becomes increasingly scarce. This creates a compelling long-term resource management challenge: balance generator usage against fuel availability, and plan for alternative solutions (wood stoves, root cellars for food preservation) as petrol becomes harder to find.
Finding and Setting Up Your First Generator
- Location
- Hardware store or construction site, then your base
Steps
- Identify hardware store, construction site, or large warehouse on your map — these are the primary generator spawn locations.
- Clear zombies from the building before looting, or lure them away with noise from a safe distance.
- Search shelves and back storage areas for a generator (it appears as a large portable engine item).
- Pick up the generator — it is heavy and will fill most of your carry capacity. Have a vehicle nearby.
- Transport the generator to your base using a vehicle (place it in trunk).
- Position the generator outside your base, preferably against an exterior wall or in a backyard area.
- Find and fill a gas can from a vehicle (siphon) or gas station pump.
- Right-click the generator and select 'Add Fuel' to fill it from your gas can.
- Right-click the generator again and select 'Connect to Power Grid' — requires Electrical Level 1.
- Right-click the generator and select 'Turn On' to start electricity flowing to the building.
Tips
- Never run the generator indoors — carbon monoxide poisoning will kill your character. Always place outside or in a detached garage with good airflow.
- Only run the generator when you need it — during cooking, charging devices, or preserving food. Turn it off when not actively using appliances to conserve fuel.
- Position the generator as far from zombie pathing routes as possible — its engine noise attracts undead and can gradually build pressure on your perimeter.
- Keep a spare gas can filled and stored inside your base for quick generator refueling.
Fueling Your Generator Long Term
Gas stations contain large underground fuel reserves that remain tappable long after individual vehicle tanks run dry. Find a gas can (one in most garages and gas stations) and a Generator Fuel Funnel (required to access the underground tank). Right-click a gas station pump with the funnel in your inventory to access the underground tank. The underground reserve holds thousands of fuel units — enough to sustain a generator for many in-game months.
Fuel siphoning from vehicles is the other primary source. With an empty gas can and a siphon hose (or sufficient Mechanics skill to siphon without a hose), right-click any vehicle to siphon its remaining fuel. Cars parked on roads throughout Knox County contain varying amounts of leftover petrol. Even a half-full car tank can extend your generator runtime by days.
As time passes in a playthrough, fuel in the world depletes permanently — other survivors and NPC logic draw down reserves, and there are no refills. Plan your fuel budget carefully in long playthroughs: track how many hours you run the generator per day and maintain a minimum reserve of 50–100 fuel units in your base storage. When fuel drops below that threshold, prioritize a dedicated scouting run to find more.
Managing Electricity and Fuel Efficiently
- Only run the generator during active base hours — turn it off when sleeping and not cooking or watching TV.
- Use the generator primarily for the refrigerator (keeps food fresh) and stove (cooking). These two alone justify the fuel cost.
- Invest in a wood-burning stove as a fuel-free cooking alternative — found in rural cabins or craftable with Metalworking skill.
- Root cellars (craftable dug-out storage areas) preserve vegetables without electricity, reducing dependence on refrigerators.
- Keep fuel stored in multiple containers in case of emergency — a single dropped gas can lost during a zombie encounter should not end your fuel supply.
- Build a second smaller generator as a backup — dual generators allow switching if one runs out unexpectedly.
- Run televisions on generator power during the day to manage Boredom and Unhappiness moodles with minimal fuel expenditure.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Electrical skill to use a generator?
You need Electrical Level 1 to connect the generator to a building's power grid. Without this skill, you can still run the generator but it will not power indoor appliances. The Electrician occupation starts with Electrical Level 3. Otherwise, find and read the Electrical for Beginners Vol. 1 book and practice dismantling electronics to reach Level 1.
How long does generator fuel last?
A fully fueled generator (100 units) lasts approximately 100 hours of runtime on default settings, though actual consumption varies by the load of connected appliances. Running only a refrigerator and occasional stove use, 100 units can last several in-game weeks if you manage carefully. Running the generator continuously (never off) will drain it in approximately 4 in-game days.
Can I move a generator after placing it?
Yes. Right-click the generator and select 'Pick Up' to return it to your inventory. You can then carry or transport it to a new location. The generator must be turned off before picking up. You will need to reconnect it to the power grid at the new location.
Where is the best place to find a generator?
Hardware stores (Bob's Sporting Goods, construction supply stores) are the most reliable. Construction sites (look for unfinished buildings with exposed concrete) often have generators left by fictional construction crews. Some rural farmhouses and large garages also spawn generators. Check the generator category in any building's loot menu — its large size makes it easy to spot on shelves.
What happens if my generator runs out of fuel while I'm asleep?
The electricity simply turns off. Your refrigerator will resume room-temperature food spoilage, lights will go out, and any running appliances will stop. This is not immediately fatal, but food in the refrigerator will begin spoiling at the accelerated unrefrigerated rate. Check your fuel level before sleeping and refuel if below 20 units.
