The Hotwiring Requirements and How to Meet Them

In the base game, hotwiring a vehicle requires two separate skills: Electrical Level 1 and Mechanics Level 2. Neither of these is a skill you start with unless you specifically choose the Repairman or Electrician occupation. Reaching these levels through natural gameplay requires reading skill books (Mechanics for Beginners Vol. 1, Electrical for Beginners Vol. 1) and then practicing the skill — uninstalling and reinstalling vehicle parts for Mechanics, or connecting and fixing electrical devices for Electrical.

Mechanics skill is gained by: uninstalling and reinstalling vehicle components (tires, battery, engine parts) using a screwdriver or wrench. Finding a broken-down vehicle and spending time removing and replacing parts is the fastest method. Electrical skill is gained by: dismantling electronic devices found throughout the world (radios, televisions, lamps) with a screwdriver. This is slower than Mechanics leveling.

The fastest non-Burglar path to hotwiring: find and read both skill books first (check school libraries, bookstores, and houses for Mechanics and Electrical books), then practice both skills simultaneously. Starting with Mechanics because Level 2 is required (versus only Level 1 for Electrical), focus screwdriver work on vehicles first. Expect 3–5 in-game days of active skill practice to reach both thresholds.

Finding Car Keys Without Hotwiring

The most reliable alternative to hotwiring is finding the actual key for the car you want to drive. Every vehicle in Project Zomboid has a corresponding key that spawns in or near the vehicle. The first place to check is the glovebox: right-click the vehicle and select 'Open Glovebox' or check the glovebox inventory while inside the driver's seat. Keys are not always in the glovebox, but this is the most common location.

If the glovebox is empty, search the house nearest the vehicle — especially bedrooms, kitchens, and living rooms. Keys often appear on key hooks (small furniture near doors), on tables, or in drawers. In commercial areas, check offices and reception desks for vehicle keys to company cars. Zombie bodies near the vehicle sometimes carry keys — looting nearby zombie corpses is worth doing even if the odds per body are low.

Large parking lot vehicles like police cars have a higher chance of having their keys in nearby buildings — police stations for police cruisers, school offices for school buses. Fire stations have fire truck keys. When you find a vehicle you want to use long-term, prioritize its key search over hotwiring because a keyed vehicle can be stopped, parked safely, and restarted without repeated hotwiring attempts.

Safe Driving Tips in Project Zomboid

  • Always check fuel level before departing — right-click the vehicle and open the vehicle information panel. Running out of fuel mid-journey in a horde is fatal.
  • Drive slowly through areas with zombie clusters — high speed reduces control and can spin the vehicle into buildings or ditches. Approach intersections cautiously.
  • Hitting zombies with your vehicle does damage to both the zombie and your vehicle. Significant damage to the engine or tires can leave you stranded. Avoid running over large groups.
  • Keep spare mechanics tools (screwdriver, wrench) and vehicle parts (spare tires, engine parts) in your car for emergency roadside repairs.
  • Vehicle alarms: some cars have alarms that trigger when the door is opened without a key. Alarms draw enormous zombie hordes from blocks away. Before opening an unknown vehicle, check if it has an alarm indication in its description, or open it and be ready to sprint away immediately.
  • Park vehicles inside garages or enclosed areas when not in use. Vehicles left on streets can be surrounded by zombies overnight and become difficult to retrieve in the morning.
  • Learn the roads of Knox County before driving at night — reduced visibility and faster zombie emergence make night driving significantly more dangerous.

Leveling Mechanics and Electrical Fast

Location
Any area with multiple vehicles and electronic devices

Steps

  1. Find and read Mechanics for Beginners Volume 1 (schools, libraries, bookstores, and sometimes houses).
  2. Find and read Electrical for Beginners Volume 1 (same locations).
  3. Locate an area with multiple accessible vehicles — parking lots, gas stations, or residential streets work well.
  4. With a screwdriver and wrench, begin removing and reinstalling vehicle tires — Mechanics XP gained each action.
  5. Simultaneously dismantle any electronic devices found nearby (TVs, radios, lamps) for Electrical XP.
  6. After reading the Volume 2 books for each skill (requires Level 1 first), repeat the process for faster XP.
  7. Continue until Mechanics reaches Level 2 and Electrical reaches Level 1.
  8. Test hotwiring by right-clicking any vehicle and selecting 'Hotwire Engine.'

Tips

  • Removing tires with a lug wrench is faster than using a screwdriver for Mechanics XP.
  • Dismantling a TV set provides a significant chunk of Electrical XP — find and dismantle multiple if available.
  • Practice in a clear, secure area — do not skill-grind vehicles on a busy street surrounded by zombies.
  • The Mechanic occupation (if chosen) can save all this skill leveling by starting at Mechanics Level 3.

Frequently asked questions

How do I hotwire a car in Project Zomboid?

You need Electrical Level 1 and Mechanics Level 2, OR the Burglar occupation. With the requirements met, right-click the vehicle from outside (or while sitting in the driver seat) and select 'Hotwire Engine.' A progress bar appears, and after completion the engine starts. Note that some vehicles have alarms that trigger during the attempt.

What happens if I trigger a car alarm?

Car alarms emit a continuous loud sound that attracts zombies from a significant radius — sometimes hundreds of zombies over several minutes. If you trigger an alarm, either drive the vehicle immediately away from the area, or sprint far enough away that the alarm sound is no longer audible to you. Do not stay near an alarming vehicle.

Can I fix a damaged car in Project Zomboid?

Yes. Open the vehicle window (V key while inside), select the part that shows damage, and use a wrench and the appropriate spare part to repair it. Engine parts, batteries, brakes, tires, and other components can all be repaired or replaced. Mechanics skill level affects repair quality and speed.

What fuel should I use and how do I get more?

Vehicles use petrol (gasoline). Siphon fuel from other vehicles using a gas can and the siphoning option (right-click a vehicle with a gas can in your inventory). Gas stations have large fuel reserves — find a gas can and a generator fuel funnel to drain the station's underground tank. Gas stations run dry over time, so maintain a fuel reserve at your base.

Can I carry passengers in my car?

Yes, in multiplayer. Different vehicle models have different passenger capacities. In single-player, survivors (NPC followers in modded games) can sometimes ride along, but base game single-player only allows one character (your own) per vehicle.
