Stardew Valley Profession Guide — Best Choices for Every Skill

How Professions Work
Every skill in Stardew Valley has two profession branches: you choose between two options when you hit Level 5, and that choice determines which two options you get at Level 10. Your Level 5 pick gates your Level 10 options — so choose carefully at Level 5. If you choose Tiller at Level 5, you get Artisan or Agriculturalist at Level 10. If you chose Rancher at Level 5, you get Shepherd or Coopmaster instead.
Professions are permanent unless you pay 10,000g to the Statue of Uncertainty in the Sewer (unlocked after donating 60 artifacts to the Museum). This lets you change profession daily (one skill per day), so no choice is truly irreversible — but the cost is significant early on.
The income comparison is clear for most skills: processing artisan goods (wine, jelly, pickles, cheese, cloth) benefits overwhelmingly from the Artisan profession. If you plan to build artisan production, take Tiller → Artisan. The other skills have similar dominant choices explained below.
Farming — Tiller vs. Rancher (Level 5)
| Profession | Bonus | Best For | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tiller | Crops worth 10% more | Crop-focused farms; unlocks Artisan at L10 | Yes — if you grow crops |
| Rancher | Animal products worth 20% more | Pure animal farms; unlocks Shepherd/Coopmaster at L10 | No — Tiller → Artisan beats this |
Verdict: Take Tiller at Level 5 in almost every case. The Artisan profession it unlocks at Level 10 adds 40% to all artisan goods (wine, jelly, cheese, cloth, mayo, etc.) — a massive income multiplier that scales with everything you process.
Farming — Artisan vs. Agriculturalist (Level 10, Tiller path)
| Profession | Bonus | Best For | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Artisan | +40% artisan goods value (wine, jelly, cheese, cloth, mayo) | Anyone with Kegs, Preserves Jars, Cheese Press, Mayonnaise Machine | Yes — best income profession in the game |
| Agriculturalist | Crops grow 10% faster | Crop-only farms that skip artisan processing | No — Artisan is almost always better |
Verdict: Artisan is one of the strongest professions in the game. Pumpkin Wine goes from 690g to 966g. Ancient Fruit Wine goes from 2,310g to 3,234g. Starfruit Wine goes from 2,250g to 3,150g. The 40% modifier stacks multiplicatively with quality and base price — take Artisan if you process anything.
Farming — Shepherd vs. Coopmaster (Level 10, Rancher path)
| Profession | Bonus | Best For | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shepherd | Sheep produce wool faster; befriend animals more easily | Wool/cloth production farm | Situational |
| Coopmaster | Coop animals befriended faster; Void Egg hatches faster | Chicken/duck/dinosaur farms | Situational |
Verdict: If you took Rancher at Level 5, Shepherd is generally better unless you run a pure Coop setup. But the Rancher → Shepherd path still loses to Tiller → Artisan for total income — switch via the Statue of Uncertainty if possible.
Fishing — Fisher vs. Trapper (Level 5)
| Profession | Bonus | Best For | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fisher | Fish worth 25% more | Active fishing players; unlocks Angler at L10 | Yes — if you fish regularly |
| Trapper | Resources required for Crab Pots reduced | Passive crab pot income streams | Only for pure crab pot builds |
Verdict: Take Fisher. The fish price bonus scales with all fish including Legend (5,000g base → 6,250g with Fisher) and Angler at Level 10 improves this to +50% total. Trapper's crab pot discount only helps if you build many pots.
Fishing — Angler vs. Pirate (Level 10, Fisher path)
| Profession | Bonus | Best For | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Angler | +50% fish value (stacks with Fisher's +25%) | Income-focused fishing | Yes — best fishing profession for gold |
| Pirate | 2x chance to find treasure while fishing | Players who want more chests and items from fishing | Fun but lower income |
Verdict: Angler wins for income. The Legend fish (5,000g base) becomes 7,500g with Angler. Pirate is fun for finding boots and rings in treasure chests, but does not beat Angler on raw gold.
Fishing — Mariner vs. Luremaster (Level 10, Trapper path)
| Profession | Bonus | Best For | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mariner | Crab pots never produce trash (only fish/crabs) | Passive crab pot income | Yes — if on Trapper path |
| Luremaster | Crab pots no longer require bait | Lazy crab pot setups without bait buying | Convenience pick |
Verdict: Mariner if you took the Trapper path — eliminating trash entirely from crab pots makes them worthwhile passive income. Luremaster saves bait costs but Mariner produces more sellable fish.
Foraging — Forester vs. Gatherer (Level 5)
| Profession | Bonus | Best For | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forester | Wood chopping yields 50% more wood | Players who need a lot of wood for building | Situational |
| Gatherer | +20% chance to find double forage items | Forage income and iridium quality at L10 | Yes — Botanist at L10 is very strong |
Verdict: Take Gatherer. Wood is easy to collect and eventually you have more than you need. Gatherer's double forage chance stacks with the powerful Botanist profession at Level 10, making all foraged items Iridium quality automatically.
Foraging — Botanist vs. Tracker (Level 10, Gatherer path)
| Profession | Bonus | Best For | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Botanist | All foraged items are Iridium quality (max value) | Anyone who forages regularly — year-round benefit | Yes — clear winner |
| Tracker | Forage item locations highlighted on map | Players who have trouble finding forage | No — map information only |
Verdict: Botanist is outstanding. Iridium quality forage sells for 1.6x the base price. Spring forage: Daffodil goes from 30g to 80g. Blackberry (Fall) goes from 20g to 80g. Wild Plum goes from 80g to 160g. All forage sells at full price with no quality variance.
Foraging — Lumberjack vs. Tapper (Level 10, Forester path)
| Profession | Bonus | Best For | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lumberjack | Any chopped tree has a chance to drop Hardwood | Hardwood farming without Secret Forest access | Yes — if on Forester path |
| Tapper | Tappers produce at half the resource requirement | Large tapper setups for Oak Resin/Maple Syrup | Situational |
Verdict: Lumberjack wins the Forester path. Hardwood is needed for many late-game crafting recipes and the farmhouse upgrades. Getting Hardwood from regular trees greatly reduces your reliance on the Secret Forest (limited daily nodes).
Mining — Miner vs. Geologist (Level 5)
| Profession | Bonus | Best For | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Miner | +1 ore per ore vein | Anyone who mines for ore and metal bars | Yes — scales with every mining run |
| Geologist | Gems appear in pairs 50% of the time | Players focused on gem income | Situational — gem income is good but inconsistent |
Verdict: Miner wins. More ore directly means more metal bars, which means more Sprinklers, more machine crafting, and faster progression. Geologist's gem bonus is nice but gem drops are random — Miner provides consistent value every run.
Mining — Blacksmith vs. Prospector (Level 10, Miner path)
| Profession | Bonus | Best For | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blacksmith | Metal bars (Copper, Iron, Gold) worth 50% more | Players who sell excess bars | Yes — strong income bonus on common drops |
| Prospector | 2x chance to find coal | Players who constantly need coal for furnaces | No — coal is common enough |
Verdict: Blacksmith wins on raw income. Gold Bar goes from 250g to 375g. Iridium Bar goes from 1,000g to 1,500g. When you have a full chest of bars to sell, Blacksmith makes a significant difference. Prospector is only worth considering if you constantly run out of coal.
Mining — Gemologist vs. Excavator (Level 10, Geologist path)
| Profession | Bonus | Best For | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemologist | Gems and minerals worth 30% more | Gem and mineral farming runs | Yes — if on Geologist path |
| Excavator | Geode minerals found in pairs | Museum donation completion speedrunners | Situational |
Verdict: Gemologist beats Excavator for income. Diamond (750g) becomes 975g. Ruby (250g) becomes 325g. If your mining style leans toward Geologist's path (e.g., gem farming in Skull Cavern), Gemologist amplifies that playstyle well.
Combat — Fighter vs. Scout (Level 5)
| Profession | Bonus | Best For | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fighter | +10% attack damage, +15 max HP | Consistent damage output and survivability | Yes — more reliable than Scout |
| Scout | Crit chance doubled | High-crit builds with luck buffs | Situational — high variance |
Verdict: Fighter is the safer, more consistent pick. The +15 HP is meaningful in early mine exploration and the +10% attack improves all combat. Scout's crit path is fun but depends on luck and the right weapon — not ideal for new players.
Combat — Brute vs. Defender (Level 10, Fighter path)
| Profession | Bonus | Best For | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brute | +20% damage when on kill streak (or consistent +20% in some builds) | Aggressive players, Skull Cavern runs | Yes — more damage = faster clears |
| Defender | +25 max HP | Survivability-focused players, hard difficulty | Situational — extra HP is nice but damage wins |
Verdict: Brute wins for efficiency. More damage means faster monster kills which means fewer hits taken — indirectly better survival. Skull Cavern runs benefit enormously from faster kills when bombing and dashing through floors.
Combat — Acrobat vs. Desperado (Level 10, Scout path)
| Profession | Bonus | Best For | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acrobat | Special charge cooldown halved | Players who use weapon special attacks frequently | Situational |
| Desperado | Critical hits can kill instantly regardless of enemy HP | High-luck, high-crit one-shot builds | Fun pick for crit enthusiasts |
Verdict: Desperado is the fun pick on the Scout path. With enough luck buffs (Spicy Eel, Lucky Lunch), high crit chance, and the right weapon, one-shots become common. It is not the most consistent choice but it is extremely satisfying when it works.

| Combat Level 5 | Fighter | +10% attack + 15 HP; unlocks Brute |
| Combat Level 10 | Brute | +20% damage for faster kills |
Best Professions for Different Playstyles
Animal farm focus: Take Rancher at Farming Level 5 and Shepherd at Level 10. Wool from Sheep processed into Cloth (Loom) with the Rancher bonus is a respectable income stream — though it still falls short of Artisan crops. Consider switching later via the Statue of Uncertainty.
Crab pot passive income: Take Trapper at Fishing Level 5 and Mariner at Level 10. Eliminate trash from crab pots entirely. This pairs well with a low-maintenance playstyle where you place 30–50 crab pots in the river and ocean and collect daily.
Museum completion speedrun: Take Geologist at Mining Level 5 and Excavator at Level 10. Geode minerals appearing in pairs dramatically speeds up Museum donation completion — valuable for unlocking the Rusty Key (Sewers access) and artifacts quickly.
Combat power fantasy: Take Scout at Combat Level 5 and Desperado at Level 10. Stack luck buffs (Spicy Eel food, Lucky Rings), equip a high-speed weapon, and watch enemies explode in one-shots. Use the Lucky Lunch or Triple Shot Espresso for Luck and Energy on deep Skull Cavern runs.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change my profession after choosing it?
Yes — use the Statue of Uncertainty in the Sewers (unlocked after donating 60 artifacts to the Museum, which gives you the Rusty Key). Pay 10,000g to reset one skill's professions per day. You can change a different skill the next day. It is expensive but not permanent.
Does Artisan affect Kegs and Preserves Jars?
Yes. Artisan adds 40% to all artisan goods, which includes wine from Kegs, jelly and pickles from Preserves Jars, cheese from the Cheese Press, mayonnaise from the Mayonnaise Machine, and cloth from the Loom. It is the single highest-impact profession for income in the game.
Does the Tiller profession bonus stack with Artisan?
Tiller's +10% crop bonus applies to raw crops only (before artisan processing). Artisan's +40% applies to the artisan good value. They do not stack directly — once you process a crop in a Keg, the Artisan bonus applies, not Tiller's. But taking Tiller is required to unlock Artisan, so it is still the right path.
Is the Angler profession worth it compared to just catching more fish?
Yes. Angler adds 50% to every fish you catch — a Legend fish goes from 5,000g to 7,500g. The bonus is multiplicative with quality, so a Gold quality Legend is 7,500g × 1.5 quality multiplier. If you fish even a few times per season, Angler adds up to thousands of gold annually.
When should I prioritize leveling Farming vs. Foraging vs. Fishing?
Level Farming first (crop income is the backbone of the economy), then Fishing (passive rainy-day income and Community Center bundles), then Foraging (free gold from walking around). Combat and Mining level naturally from your mine runs — you rarely need to grind them intentionally.
Does the Botanist profession work on mushrooms from the Cave?
Yes — Botanist applies to all foraged items including Mushrooms collected from the Mushroom Cave (one of the cave upgrade options), Spring Onions in Cindersap Forest, and seasonal forage items. All of these become Iridium quality automatically with Botanist active.
