How to Get Wings in Terraria — All Wing Types & Best Early Options

Why Wings Are Critical in Terraria
Wings transform mobility in Terraria. With wings equipped, you can jump and then hold the jump button to fly upward for a limited duration, allowing you to navigate terrain freely, dodge boss attacks, and reach sky biomes. Every Hardmode player should prioritize getting wings as early as possible.
Most wings require Hardmode materials — primarily Souls of Flight from Wyverns and various other souls or materials from specific sources. The exception is the Fledgling Wings, which are found in Skyware Chests on floating islands and can be obtained pre-Hardmode, but their flight time is very short.
Once you have wings, upgrade them as soon as possible. Each tier of wings provides more flight time, height, and/or horizontal speed. Endgame wings like Fishron Wings, Betsy's Wings, and the Nebula Mantle provide nearly unlimited flight.
Farming Souls of Flight (Wing Materials)
- Location
- Sky biome — above cloud layer (approximately Y 400-700 in large worlds)
- Start point
- Build a long platform high in the sky, above the cloud layer
- Yield
- 5-15 Souls of Flight per Wyvern; also yields Feathers from Harpies
Steps
- Build a long platform 200+ blocks wide at or above cloud altitude. Use Wings or a Rope bridge up from a sky island.
- Stand on the platform with a Water Candle held (not placed) for +27% enemy spawn rate.
- Drink a Battle Potion for an additional +100% spawn rate boost.
- Wait for Wyverns to spawn — they are long, serpentine sky enemies that appear at altitude.
- Kill Wyverns with piercing weapons or rapid-fire; they have many HP but are not highly aggressive.
- Collect 20 Souls of Flight per Wing recipe (varies by wing type).
- Collect Feathers dropped by Harpies in the same area (needed for first Wing recipes).
Tips
- Wyverns only spawn if no other large enemies or bosses are active. Clear other enemies before expecting Wyvern spawns.
- The Celestial Magnet helps pull up soul drops from below if they fall.
- Giant Harpies also drop Giant Harpy Feathers used for Harpy Wings — two crafting items in one farm.

Best Early Hardmode Wings
Your first priority in early Hardmode should be any available wings, then upgrading them. The easiest first wings to craft are Angel Wings or Demon Wings, which require only 10 Feathers (Harpy drops in Sky biome) and 20 Souls of Flight (Wyvern drops in Sky biome) plus 25 Souls of Light (Angel) or Souls of Night (Demon). Since you will likely be farming Souls of Night and Light early anyway, these wings come naturally.
Harpy Wings are also excellent and require only 1 Giant Harpy Feather (dropped by Giant Harpies in the sky) plus 20 Souls of Flight. Giant Harpies are a rare variant of the standard Harpy — farm the sky platform until one drops. Harpy Wings have the same flight time as Angel/Demon Wings but with slightly better characteristics.
Leaf Wings deserve special mention: they are bought directly from the Witch Doctor NPC for 1 Platinum Coin if he is housed in a Jungle biome home and you visit him at night. This bypasses the need for Souls of Flight entirely — if you have the coin, buy them immediately.
Best Late-Game Wings
Fishron Wings, dropped by Duke Fishron, are the best pre-endgame wings. They have exceptional flight time, great horizontal speed, and uniquely allow you to hover over liquids — extremely useful in many biomes and boss arenas. Farm Duke Fishron (summon with Truffle Worm fished in an Underground Mushroom biome) for these wings.
Betsy's Wings from the Old One's Army event (Tier 3) are another strong late-game option with great upward flight speed. In the endgame, the Luminite-crafted wings (Solar, Nebula, Stardust, Vortex) all provide essentially unlimited flight, with each matching a class's Lunar Fragment type. Craft whichever matches your endgame armor set.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get wings before Hardmode?
The only pre-Hardmode wing is the Fledgling Wings, found in Skyware Chests on floating sky islands. These have very short flight time. Virtually all useful wings require Hardmode materials (Souls of Flight from Wyverns). Your first meaningful wings will be crafted shortly after entering Hardmode.
How many Souls of Flight do I need for wings?
Most wing recipes require 20 Souls of Flight. Each Wyvern drops 5-10 Souls of Flight, so you need to kill roughly 3-4 Wyverns per wing set. Farm Wyverns with a Water Candle + Battle Potion on a sky platform for efficient runs.
Where do I craft wings?
Wings are crafted at a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil (Hardmode crafting stations). If you do not have one yet, craft it from 10 Mythril/Orichalcum Bars. The recipes use Souls of Flight plus one or two additional materials depending on the wing type.
Are Leaf Wings worth buying?
Yes. Leaf Wings can be bought for 1 Platinum Coin from the Witch Doctor NPC (housed in Jungle biome) at night. They have the same flight quality as Fairy/Angel/Demon Wings but require no Hardmode soul farming. If you have the money, this is the fastest path to your first wings.
What wings should I use for Moon Lord?
For Moon Lord, the best wings are Fishron Wings (if you have defeated Duke Fishron) or endgame Luminite wings. However, the UFO Mount (Cosmic Car Key, from Martian Madness event) provides true unlimited flight, which is arguably better than any wings for Moon Lord because it does not depend on jump timing and allows hovering in place.
