How to Beat Moder in Valheim — Mountain Boss Guide & Dragon Fight Tips

Who Is Moder?
Moder is Valheim's fourth Forsaken boss and the primary gatekeeper of the Plains biome tier. She is an ancient dragon — or in Valheim's Norse mythology, a wyvern — with frost powers and immense physical presence. Her Mountain biome home is already one of the most hostile environments in Valheim (freezing temperatures, Wolf attacks, Drake patrols), making the journey to her altar as treacherous as the fight itself.
Moder is unique among Valheim bosses because she spends significant time airborne, making ranged combat a primary phase of the fight. However, she also lands regularly, transitioning to devastating melee swipes that punish players who are not already in position to dodge or block.
The reward for defeating Moder is the Dragon Tear — a unique crafting material used to build the Artisan Table. The Artisan Table unlocks the Windmill (converts Barley to Flour) and Spinning Wheel (converts Flax to Linen Thread), which are required for Plains-tier food and Padded Armor crafting. Moder is therefore a required progression boss before entering the Plains in force.
How to Find and Summon Moder
- Locate Moder's altar by reading Vegvisir runestones found in Stone Tower structures scattered throughout the Mountain biome.
- Collect 3 Dragon Eggs — large, heavy purple eggs (150 weight each) found near Drake nests in the Mountains. Each egg fills your carry capacity significantly — make multiple trips or use a Cart/Longship to transport them.
- Bring a Portal near Moder's altar to allow fast travel during Dragon Egg transport. Note: you cannot carry Dragon Eggs through portals — transport them on foot or by cart.
- Place all 3 Dragon Eggs on Moder's altar (a large stone formation surrounded by stone pillars in a mountain clearing).
- Moder roars and descends from the sky immediately after the offering. Step back and prepare for aerial combat.
Recommended Gear for Moder
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Armor | Wolf Armor (Chest, Legs) + Drake Helmet or Lox Cape | Wolf Armor provides Frost Resistance passively — essential for Mountain combat |
| Shield | Iron Tower Shield or Silver Shield | For blocking Moder's melee swipes when she lands |
| Melee Weapon | Silver Sword or Frostner | Silver weapons for high damage on her landing phase; Frostner also slows her |
| Ranged Weapon | Draugr Fang Bow with Fire Arrows | Moder is weak to fire — fire arrows deal significantly more damage |
| Food 1 | Serpent Stew or Wolf Meat Skewer | Maximum HP and Stamina food at this progression stage |
| Food 2 | Bread or Turnip Stew | Balanced HP/Stamina for sustained combat |
| Food 3 | Cooked Wolf Meat or Honey | Fill all three food slots; HP totals matter enormously |
| Mead 1 | Frost Resistance Mead (if not wearing Wolf Armor) | If you lack Wolf Armor, bring Frost Resistance Mead to prevent freezing debuff |
| Mead 2 | Medium Healing Mead | Emergency health recovery after Moder's melee attacks |
Moder's Attack Patterns
- Ice Breath (Airborne) — While flying, Moder descends and breathes a stream of frost at your position. The ice breath deals Cold damage and applies Freezing, slowing movement and stamina regen. Dodge sideways when you see her dive and orient toward you. Wolf Armor's Frost Resistance negates the Freezing debuff.
- Ice Bolt Spread (Airborne) — She shoots multiple ice projectiles in a spread pattern from altitude. Move unpredictably and use terrain (large boulders) as cover. These projectiles have travel time — staying mobile makes them easy to dodge.
- Melee Swipe (Landing) — When Moder lands, she swipes with her claw in a forward arc. Roll backward or sideways immediately when she begins landing. Her landed form is your primary melee DPS window.
- Wing Slam (Landing) — A heavy slam with her wings that deals AoE damage around her. Don't stand directly beside her wings — stay in front or behind her body for safer positioning.
- Ice Breath (Grounded) — She also breathes frost when grounded, sweeping it in front of her. Circle to her flank or rear to avoid it while maintaining melee contact.
Fight Strategy
The fight has two phases: aerial and grounded. During the aerial phase, focus exclusively on ranged damage with fire arrows (Moder's weakness). Use large rocks and boulders as cover from ice bolt spreads. Aim at her body — her wings are mostly non-critical hit zones. She will cycle between airborne ice breath passes and landing for melee.
When Moder lands, immediately switch to melee. Use a Silver Sword or Frostner and attack her flanks while avoiding her claw swipes. Block or dodge her wing slams. This window is the fastest damage phase — make the most of it before she takes off again. A parry timing on her claw swipe with the Iron Buckler staggers her briefly for a free power attack.
The Mountain terrain matters — fight in a relatively open area near her altar. Avoid being cornered against cliffs or large rock formations that block your movement when she uses ice breath. If you lose sight of her while she is airborne, listen for her roar which signals an incoming dive attack.

After Defeating Moder: Next Steps
- Use Dragon Tears (2x from Moder) to craft the Artisan Table at your base Forge or Workbench area.
- Build a Windmill (near a wind source, on flat terrain) to convert Barley into Barley Flour for Plains-tier food.
- Build a Spinning Wheel to convert Flax into Linen Thread for Padded Armor crafting.
- Craft Padded Armor (Chest, Legs, Helmet) using Iron + Linen Thread at the Forge — required for survival in the Plains biome.
- Begin locating Yagluth's altar in the Plains by reading runestones in Fuling villages or Stone Monuments.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find Moder's altar in Valheim?
Moder's altar is located in the Mountain biome. Read Vegvisir runestones found inside Stone Tower structures in the Mountains to reveal her location on the map. Stone Towers are tall rectangular stone ruins that appear occasionally across the Mountains.
How do I get Dragon Eggs for Moder?
Dragon Eggs are found near Drake nests in the Mountain biome — large purple eggs resting on rocky outcroppings. They weigh 150 each and cannot be taken through portals. Collect 3 and carry them to Moder's altar on foot or by cart. Clear Drakes near the eggs before picking them up to avoid being harassed while over-encumbered.
What is Moder's weakness in Valheim?
Moder is weak to fire damage. Fire Arrows deal significantly more damage than standard arrows against her. Bring a Draugr Fang or fully-upgraded Hunting Bow loaded with Fire Arrows for her aerial phase. Melee weapons like the Silver Sword deal good damage when she is grounded.
Do I need Frost Resistance to fight Moder?
Yes — Mountain cold is always active, and Moder's ice attacks apply Freezing. Wolf Armor (Chest piece) provides passive Frost Resistance. If you do not yet have Wolf Armor, bring Frost Resistance Mead instead. Without one of these, the Freezing debuff will significantly impair your movement and stamina during the fight.
What does Dragon Tear unlock?
Dragon Tears are used to craft the Artisan Table, which is a new crafting station that unlocks the Windmill (Barley → Barley Flour) and Spinning Wheel (Flax → Linen Thread). These are required for Plains biome food and Padded Armor — critical progression items for fighting Yagluth, the fifth boss.
Can I fight Moder at the same time as other bosses?
You can summon and fight each boss in any order, but Moder is the fourth boss in the intended sequence and is significantly easier if you have Iron or better armor. Attempting Moder before Bonemass with Bronze or Troll Leather gear is very difficult. Following the intended progression order (Eikthyr → Elder → Bonemass → Moder → Yagluth) is strongly recommended.
