Where Does Iron Come From in Valheim?

Iron is obtained primarily from Muddy Scrap Piles inside Sunken Crypts in the Swamp biome. Sunken Crypts are dungeon-like structures that appear partially submerged in the Swamp — they look like stone towers or ruins with a distinctive door. The Swamp Key (dropped by The Elder, the Black Forest boss) is required to open their doors.

Inside the Crypts, rooms are filled with Muddy Scrap Piles — large mounds of dirt that block corridors. Break them with your Pickaxe (Iron Pickaxe preferred for speed) to collect Iron Scrap, Withered Bones (used to summon Bonemass), Yellow Mushrooms, and occasionally other items.

Iron cannot be teleported through portals — you must carry it physically back to your base or smelt it at a secondary base near the Swamp. Plan your mining expeditions accordingly.

Sunken Crypt Iron Farming Route

Location

Start point
Swamp biome coastline or river access point
Yield
30-100 Iron Scrap per Crypt; multiple Crypts per Swamp zone

Steps

  1. Obtain the Swamp Key from The Elder before attempting any Crypt farming.
  2. Locate Sunken Crypts by exploring the Swamp biome — look for stone tower structures partially sunk into the ground.
  3. Equip Iron Armor (or at minimum Bronze Armor) and bring Swamp-appropriate gear: a weapon for Draugr and blobs, Poison Resistance Mead for blob poison.
  4. Open the Crypt with the Swamp Key and enter. Clear the entrance room of Draugr before starting to mine.
  5. Break Muddy Scrap Piles with your Pickaxe to unblock corridors and collect Iron Scrap.
  6. Explore all rooms — Crypts can be large with multiple branching corridors. Each pile yields 4-8 Iron Scrap.
  7. Collect all Withered Bones for Bonemass summoning (saves a separate farming trip).
  8. When your inventory is full, return to your boat and transport Iron Scrap back to your Smelter.

Tips

  • Build a small outpost near the Swamp with a Smelter and Charcoal Kiln — smelt Iron on-site and transport Iron Bars instead.
  • Iron Bars are also impossible to teleport, so the outpost strategy saves many boat trips.
  • The Swamp is very dark — bring a torch or the Dvergr Circlet (Mistlands) for visibility.
  • Poison Resistance Mead is crucial: Blob enemies in Swamps apply heavy poison that can kill you quickly without resistance.

How to Process Iron Scrap

Iron Scrap must be smelted into Iron Bars before use. Build a Smelter (5 Surtling Cores + 20 Stone) and fuel it with Coal (made in a Charcoal Kiln: 2 Coal per Wood round). Each Iron Scrap produces 1 Iron Bar. Smelting time is approximately 32 seconds per bar.

The Charcoal Kiln (20 Round Logs) converts Wood or Round Logs into Coal at 1:1 ratio. Keep the Kiln and Smelter running simultaneously — this is the most efficient production setup. For large Iron runs, set up two Smelters and one Kiln.

Build your Smelter at your base or at a Swamp outpost. Remember that Iron Bars still cannot be teleported through portals, so you will need to sail or walk home with all processed bars regardless.

Total Iron Needed & How Many Crypts

A full Iron armor set (Helmet + Scale Mail + Greaves) costs 60 Iron Bars. An Iron weapon costs an additional 20-30 Bars. Upgrading weapons and armor to max quality roughly doubles the material cost. Plan for 200-400 Iron Bars for a fully equipped character with max-quality gear.

Each medium-sized Sunken Crypt yields approximately 40-70 Iron Scrap (= 40-70 Iron Bars after smelting). A large Crypt can yield over 100. Realistically, you need to clear 3-8 Crypts for a solid Iron setup, depending on their size and how many you upgrade.

Swamp biomes typically contain 3-8 Crypts per zone. If your starting Swamp is small, sail to find another Swamp biome on your world — there are always multiple.

Swamp Survival Tips for Iron Farming

  • Bring Poison Resistance Mead — Blobs and Oozers apply lethal poison. Craft from Honey + Thistle + Neck Tail + Coal in a Fermenter.
  • Wear Iron Armor minimum — Draugr Elites hit extremely hard with two-handed weapons.
  • Carry a Flint Arrow ranged option for Draugr Archers hiding in Crypt alcoves.
  • Watch for Surtling spawns near fire geysers — they drop Surtling Cores needed for more Smelters.
  • Keep a Campfire + Bed in your outpost for emergency respawn and Resting bonus.
  • Use the Elder Forsaken Power in the Swamp — trees are everywhere and you may need wood for torches and coal production.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the Swamp Key for every Sunken Crypt visit?

Yes, the Swamp Key is required each time to open a Crypt door. However, you do not lose the key when using it — it is reusable. You keep the single Swamp Key in your inventory and use it repeatedly. Store it safely and never discard it.

Can I get Iron without going to the Swamp?

Very small amounts of Iron Scrap occasionally appear in chests in Black Forest dungeons, but this is unreliable and yields very little. The Swamp's Sunken Crypts are the only practical Iron farming location. There is no alternative method to get significant amounts of Iron.

Why can't I teleport Iron bars?

The game intentionally prevents ore and metal bars (copper, tin, bronze, iron, silver, black metal, flametal) from being teleported through portals. This is a game design choice to make resource hauling a meaningful part of the game and to give sailing a purpose. Use a boat to transport large quantities.

How many Muddy Scrap Piles are in a Sunken Crypt?

This varies significantly by Crypt size. A small Crypt may have 8-15 piles (40-100 Iron Scrap), while large Crypts can have 20-30+ piles (100-200+ Iron Scrap). Crypts are procedurally generated, so each one is different. Always fully explore every room and corridor to maximize iron per Crypt visit.

What is the fastest way to break Muddy Scrap Piles?

A fully upgraded Iron Pickaxe is the fastest tool for breaking Muddy Scrap Piles. The Antler Pickaxe also works but takes more swings. Bronze Pickaxe is faster than Antler. As soon as you have Iron, craft and upgrade an Iron Pickaxe for future mining sessions — it significantly speeds up farming runs.
