Wisp Build Guide in Warframe — Best Motes & Support Setup

Wisp Ability Overview
Wisp is a unique Warframe that becomes invisible while airborne, giving her excellent mobility and survivability as long as she stays off the ground. Her kit revolves around Reservoir (1), which lets her place up to three types of Mote deployables simultaneously — each providing a distinct buff to all allies who walk through the reservoirs.
Wil-O-Wisp (2) sends out a spectral decoy that Wisp can teleport to, making it an excellent escape tool and a method to reposition across the tileset instantly. Breach Surge (3) opens solar rifts on enemies, creating a blinding burst that also spawns surge wisps to attack other enemies. Breach Surge is Wisp's primary CC tool and a significant damage amplifier when combined with Sol Gate.
Sol Gate (4) is Wisp's ultimate — she fires a sustained beam of solar plasma that deals enormous Heat and Radiation damage to everything it touches. At high Strength values, Sol Gate can one-shot most non-boss enemies. With the Breach Surge synergy active, Sol Gate spawns additional surge wisps on hit, multiplying its effective AoE damage. This makes the Surge-then-Sol-Gate combination Wisp's signature offensive rotation.
Mote Types and Their Effects

| Mod 3 | Transient Fortitude | High Strength at the cost of Duration; balanced by Primed Continuity |
| Mod 4 | Augur Message | Duration boost that also contributes to Augur set bonus |
| Mod 5 | Stretch | Range extends Breach Surge coverage and Sol Gate beam width |
| Mod 6 | Streamline | Efficiency for sustainable Sol Gate and Breach Surge casting |
| Mod 7 | Adaptation | Passive damage resistance — critical for Steel Path viability |
| Mod 8 | Vitality | HP buffer alongside Vitality Mote self-buff |
| Arcane 1 | Arcane Energize | Energy restoration sustains Sol Gate and frequent Breach Surge casts |
| Arcane 2 | Molt Vigor or Arcane Grace | Molt Vigor boosts Strength post-Molt equivalent; Grace restores HP on critical hits |
Wisp's Invisibility Mechanic — Staying Airborne
Wisp's passive makes her invisible while airborne — she cannot be directly targeted by enemies as long as she is not touching the ground. This is one of the most powerful defensive passives in Warframe: you can hover in place while casting abilities or traversing open areas with minimal danger of being targeted. The invisibility is complete for ranged enemies and significantly reduces threat from melee enemies.
Practical application: aim to cast Sol Gate from the air, move between Mote reservoir placements with parkour, and use Wil-O-Wisp (2) to teleport to your spectral decoy in dangerous positions without touching the ground in unsafe areas. The invisibility is not available while using melee weapons or performing ground-level actions, but is otherwise always active while airborne.
This passive synergizes well with missions requiring repositioning (Spy, Capture, Exterminate) and makes Wisp one of the safer frames to play in high-enemy-density missions. In Survival, station her Motes near life support capsules, stay airborne near the capsule area, and use Sol Gate to clear incoming waves without being hit.
Sol Gate Damage Build (Personal DPS Priority)
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aura | Corrosive Projection | Armor reduction maximizes Sol Gate's Heat damage against armored targets |
| Exilus | Power Drift | Extra Strength for Sol Gate damage |
| Mod 1 | Intensify | Strength is the primary Sol Gate damage multiplier |
| Mod 2 | Transient Fortitude | Large Strength gain — essential for high Sol Gate DPS |
| Mod 3 | Blind Rage | Maximum Strength at high efficiency cost; manage with Streamline |
| Mod 4 | Streamline | Compensate for Blind Rage efficiency penalty |
| Mod 5 | Primed Flow | Large energy pool to sustain Sol Gate's ongoing drain |
| Mod 6 | Stretch | Range increases Sol Gate beam width |
| Mod 7 | Adaptation | Passive survivability during Sol Gate channeling |
| Mod 8 | Umbral Vitality | HP pool for safety during extended Sol Gate use |
| Arcane 1 | Arcane Energize | Energy restoration to fuel Sol Gate's ongoing drain |
| Arcane 2 | Arcane Fury | Melee crit damage boost for Toxic Lash integration if using melee between Sol Gate casts |
Advanced Wisp Playstyle Tips
- Place all three Mote types together at a central location teammates will frequent — life support capsules in Survival or capture points in Interception are ideal.
- Breach Surge before Sol Gate: cast Surge on an enemy cluster, then immediately activate Sol Gate. Sol Gate hits surged enemies and spawns additional wisps that attack nearby enemies, massively extending AoE damage.
- Wil-O-Wisp (2) can be used as an escape — if threatened, activate the decoy, move away, then teleport to the decoy's position which may now be safer. The decoy draws enemy attention.
- In Defense missions, place Vitality and Shock Motes on or near the defense objective to keep it buffed against enemies.
- Wisp's invisibility does not prevent damage from AoE or splash attacks — avoid standing near explosive enemies or Bombard rockets even while airborne.
- Mote reservoirs persist for the entire mission once placed and do not need to be recast unless Wisp dies or is dismissed. Place them at the start of a Survival run near the primary combat area and they will benefit the squad all mission.
Frequently asked questions
What is Wisp's best support build?
Focus on Ability Strength and Duration to maximize Mote effectiveness. Key mods: Primed Continuity (Duration), Intensify or Umbral Intensify (Strength), Transient Fortitude (Strength), and Stretch (Range). Add Adaptation for survivability. Use Arcane Energize to sustain energy for Sol Gate and Breach Surge.
What does the Haste Mote do?
The Haste Mote increases fire rate and movement speed for all allies who walk through the reservoir. At base Strength, it grants +25% to each. With high Strength investment, this can reach 40–50%+ bonuses, dramatically improving DPS output for gun-focused frames like Mesa or Ash.
Is Wisp good for Steel Path?
Yes. Wisp's Motes provide massive HP bonuses from the Vitality Mote at high Strength, and her Sol Gate deals enough damage to kill Steel Path enemies with Breach Surge synergy. Adaptation provides passive damage resistance. Her invisibility passive also reduces incoming hits, making her safer to play than frames without defensive passives.
How does Wisp become invisible?
Wisp is invisible while airborne — she cannot be directly targeted by ranged enemies as long as she is not on the ground. This is a passive ability that requires no activation. Combine with parkour and jumping during combat to stay airborne and minimize being hit.
Where do I get Wisp blueprints?
All of Wisp's component blueprints drop from the Ropalolyst assassination mission on Jupiter. Completing the Chimera Prologue quest unlocks access to the Ropalolyst. The main blueprint must be purchased from the in-game Market.
Should I play Wisp as support or damage?
Both roles are viable, but Wisp is most valuable in a squad as a support frame providing Motes. Solo or in squads without dedicated DPS, she can also deal significant damage with high-Strength Sol Gate. For public matchmaking, the support build is more team-friendly. For Steel Path solo, a hybrid build with Adaptation and strong Strength works best.
