What is an Eidolon Hunt?

Eidolons are massive Sentient bosses that appear only on the Plains of Eidolon (Cetus) at night. The night cycle lasts ~50 minutes; during this window you can fight 1, 2, or all 3 Eidolons (a 'Tridolon') if your team is geared and fast enough. The fight involves stripping the Eidolon's energy shield with operator amp damage, breaking limbs with sniper/heavy weapon damage, and managing 4+ Quill 'lures' to capture rather than kill for bonus loot.

Why hunt Eidolons: the rewards are best-in-game. Eidolon Shards convert to Focus (the operator school progression) at 1,000–5,000 focus per shard. Arcane drops (Energize, Grace, Velocity, Acceleration, Eruption) sell for 100–500 Platinum each on the trade market. Cetus Wisps are required for several Plains-rep crafting recipes. A full Tridolon run rewards roughly 10–15 arcane drops and 20,000+ focus.

Why this matters: Eidolons are the most efficient path to maxed operator focus schools and the largest Plat-per-hour activity in Warframe (rivaled only by Index farming). Once you have a stable Tridolon setup, you can run 1 Tridolon per ~50-minute night cycle and earn substantial progression.

Required Setup — Gear and Mods

Warframe: Volt Prime (or Chroma Prime, Trinity Prime, Harrow Prime) — Volt's electric shield doubles weapon damage when shot through it. Chroma's elemental ward boosts damage taken AND given. Trinity's energy vampire keeps you fueled. Harrow's covenant grants invulnerability and crit chance. The most popular meta is Volt + Chroma + Trinity for 4-player teams.

Primary weapon: Rubico Prime (the meta sniper). Riven mods can push DPS to 2–3 million per shot. Other viable: Lanka, Vectis Prime, Komorex. Mod for radiation damage (Eidolons are Alloy Armor → Sentient resistance is broken by Operator amp damage on the shield). Slot Serration, Split Chamber, Heavy Caliber, Vital Sense, Point Strike, Critical Delay, and 2 radiation mods (Stormbringer + Hellfire).

Operator amp: Madurai school operator with a Mote/Cantic/Klamora amp combination. Prism choice doesn't matter as much as the brace/scaffold combo — Klamora Prism (high crit chance) or Lega Prism (highest energy efficiency) are popular. Source the amp parts from Cephalon Suda or Vox Solaris standing.

Lures: 4 Eidolon Lures crafted from Cetus quill standing (Quills rank up by killing Sentients). Lures cap Eidolon shield drains so it doesn't regenerate. Charge each lure with 3 Vomvalyst kills (the small floating Sentient ghosts on the Plains at night). 3 lures = capture for Teralyst. 4 lures = capture for Gantulyst/Hydrolyst.

How to Summon and Engage Each Eidolon

Teralyst: Once night falls on the Plains, the Teralyst is automatically present. Find it walking around the Plains (use the minimap or the visible giant Sentient silhouette). Engage by shooting its shield with your operator amp (energy weapon). Shield down → break limbs with sniper → 4 limbs destroyed → the Teralyst kneels and you can capture (with 3+ lures present) or kill it.

Gantulyst summoning: After the Teralyst is defeated, the Gantulyst summon ritual begins. Bring the Brilliant Eidolon Shard from the Teralyst kill to one of the 4 active shrines on the Plains. Activate the shrine. Wait ~30 seconds, the Gantulyst spawns at that shrine's location. Engage same way: shield damage with amp, limb damage with sniper.

Hydrolyst summoning: After Gantulyst kill, bring the Radiant Eidolon Shard to another shrine and activate it. The Hydrolyst spawns. This is the hardest of the three — shield is largest, limbs hardest to break. Engagement order: amp shield, break front legs first, then back legs, then capture.

Full Tridolon: Complete all three before night ends. Speed is critical — 3 captures + 2 shrine rituals must finish in ~50 minutes. Speedrun teams can do this in 25 minutes, leaving 20+ minutes to farm Plains rep or do additional Bounties.

Capture vs Kill — Reward Comparison

OutcomeCaptureKill
Eidolon Shard drops+1 Brilliant/Radiant/Flawless shard1 of each tier
Arcane drops+1 Arcane per Eidolon (random tier)No bonus arcane
Quill standing+5,000 Quill standing+2,500 Quill standing
Sentient Cores+1 Sentient Core (rare resource)No core drop
Cetus Wisp chance~70% chance per Eidolon~50% chance
Cetus Wisp count+1 if captured+0 to +1

Verdict: Always capture if possible — the Arcane drop, Quill standing, and Cetus Wisp difference is the main reward. The 3 lures (Teralyst) or 4 lures (Gantulyst/Hydrolyst) charging requirement is the only barrier to capture; charging takes ~5 minutes of Vomvalyst killing, well worth the reward.

Tridolon Speedrun Route (50 Minutes)

Minute 0–5: Equip squad. Volt (host), Chroma, Trinity, Harrow. Each player calls their role. Squad enters Plains during day → walk to Gara Toht Lake. Use Plains of Eidolon's coordinates: roughly N-25, E-12 (Gara Toht Lake center).

Minute 5–10: Night cycle begins. Locate Teralyst (visible as massive silhouette). Charge 4 lures by killing Vomvalysts (groups of 3–4 spawn near the Eidolon's path). Damage Teralyst shield with operator amp until it depletes. Break all 4 limbs with sniper. Capture with 3 lures present. ~10 minutes total for Teralyst.

Minute 10–25: Use Brilliant Shard at Gara Toht shrine. Wait for spawn. Engage Gantulyst — Volt shield up, Chroma elemental ward up, snipe limbs. ~10–15 minutes total.

Minute 25–40: Use Radiant Shard at next shrine. Spawn Hydrolyst. Engage with peak coordination — Hydrolyst has the highest shield. ~15 minutes for capture.

Minute 40–50: Cool-down. Day cycle approaches. Cash in shards at Onkko (Quill leader) for focus. Plains rep for daily standing. Repeat next night cycle if your team has another run in them.

Eidolon Hunt Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not bringing lures: Capture without lures is impossible — you need 3+ charged lures for Teralyst capture, 4+ for Gantulyst/Hydrolyst. Each lure costs Cetus quill standing.
  • Skipping limb destruction: You can't capture or kill the Eidolon's body until all 4 limbs are broken. The Eidolon enters 'kneeling' phase only after all limbs are destroyed.
  • Letting the shield regenerate: Eidolon shields regenerate quickly if you stop attacking. Maintain DPS pressure — Volt's electric shield can sustain your Rubico shots through it.
  • Not bringing energy for operator: Operator amp requires Operator energy. Maintain Energy Restores (or Trinity Energy Vampire) to keep operator amp firing.
  • Wasting day cycle waiting: Don't sit around at night cycle start. Use the day cycle to gather quill standing, do bounties, run Captain Vor for arcanes — anything that doesn't waste time.
  • Bad squad communication: Tridolon requires coordination — Volt host calls the cycle, Chroma activates ward at proper times, Trinity drops bless when needed. Use voice comms.
  • Not running radiation damage: Eidolons are Alloy Armor and take radiation damage as a primary weakness. Mod Rubico for radiation (Stormbringer + Hellfire combo) for maximum DPS.
  • Not killing Vomvalysts efficiently: Vomvalysts charge lures and drop Brilliant Eidolon Shards (a side reward). Run a Saryn or Mesa on the side, or use a Glaive Prime for area damage.

Frequently asked questions

What time of day must I be in the Plains for Eidolons?

Night cycle — Eidolons only appear at night on the Plains of Eidolon. The Plains cycle is ~50 minutes day + ~50 minutes night, repeating. Check the in-game clock by hovering over Cetus on the navigation map. If it's day, wait or come back later. Don't enter the Plains expecting Eidolons during the day.

Do I need a sniper rifle, or can I use other weapons?

Sniper rifles are best — Rubico Prime is the meta. The high single-shot damage and crit multipliers break Eidolon limbs efficiently. Bows (Daikyu Prime, Lenz) work but require more setup. Standard rifles (Tonkor, Lanka with crit setup) can work in some configurations. Avoid pure shotguns or low-DPS weapons — the limb HP is too high.

How do I get an operator amp for Eidolons?

Visit the Quills (after completing the War Within quest). Spend Quill Standing on amp prism/scaffold/brace blueprints. Build at the Quill Lab in your Orbiter. Recommended first-amp: Mote prism (free) + Klamora scaffold + Certus brace = the 'Magicus Amp' loadout. Upgrade to Mote+Klamora+Lega when you can.

Can I solo Eidolons?

Solo Teralyst is doable with Volt + Rubico + Madurai amp. Solo Gantulyst is hard but possible. Solo Hydrolyst is extremely difficult and not recommended without speedrunner-tier gear. Most Eidolon hunting is done in 4-player squads via the Recruit chat ('LF Tridolon' calls) for efficiency.

What is the best Arcane to farm from Eidolons?

Arcane Energize (chance from Eidolon captures) is the most valuable — 50% chance on critical hit to restore 25% energy. Worth 200–400 Plat unmaxed. Arcane Grace (50% chance to regenerate health) is the second-most valuable, ~150–300 Plat. Other arcanes (Velocity, Acceleration, Eruption) sell for less. Stacking 11 of any arcane to 'maxed' costs significant effort but yields massive utility.

How long does it take to maxed Focus from Eidolons?

Approximately 50–100 Tridolon runs to max one Focus school. Each Tridolon yields 5–10 Eidolon Shards (depending on capture vs kill ratios). At 5,000 focus per Flawless Shard + 2,500 per Radiant + 1,000 per Brilliant, you generate 15,000–25,000 focus per Tridolon. Maxing a Focus school requires 1.5–2 million focus.

Is the Cetus Wisp worth farming during Eidolon hunts?

Yes — Cetus Wisps drop from Eidolon captures (~70% chance per Eidolon) and are required for several Plains-rep crafting recipes (e.g., Bloodbinding Wraith, Necramech parts). Many players combine Eidolon hunts with Cetus Wisp farming on the Plains in the day cycle. Each Tridolon should yield 2–4 Cetus Wisps.

What's the easiest Eidolon for beginners?

The Teralyst. Smallest shield, easiest limbs to break, no add-spawning, lowest gear requirement. Solo a Teralyst first with Volt + Rubico + Madurai amp. Once you've captured Teralyst 5–10 times, you'll have enough Quill standing and Sentient Core to upgrade your amp and try the Gantulyst.
