Physical Damage Types: Impact, Puncture, and Slash

Every weapon in Warframe deals at least one physical damage type. Impact is blunt force damage — it procs Stagger, temporarily flinching enemies. Impact is effective against Corpus Shields but performs poorly against Ferrite Armor (Grineer infantry). Puncture is piercing damage that procs Weakened, reducing enemy damage output by 30% for a few seconds. Puncture is strong against both Ferrite and Alloy Armor types.

Slash is the most powerful physical damage type in most endgame builds. Slash procs Bleed, a damage-over-time effect that deals a percentage of your hit damage as True Damage — bypassing armor entirely. This means even if an enemy has 95% damage reduction from armor, the Slash bleed tick hits for full calculated damage. Viral+Slash is the dominant endgame damage formula: Viral halves enemy effective health, and Slash bleed bypasses the remaining armor.

Balancing physical damage on weapons: melee weapons show their physical damage split in the arsenal (percentage of total raw damage that is Impact/Puncture/Slash). When adding elemental mods, you keep all physical damage. Most melee weapon builds try to have high Slash percentage while adding Viral combination mods.

Base Elemental Damage Types

Heat damage procs Ignite, dealing damage over time and reducing enemy movement speed. Heat alone is moderate against Grineer and deals bonus damage to Infested. Cold procs Freeze, slowing enemy movement and attack speed. Cold is effective against Corpus Shields and Alloy Armor on elite Grineer units. Electric procs Shocking, stunning enemies with chain lightning that jumps to nearby units — excellent crowd control in dense groups. Toxin procs Poison DoT, critically important because Toxin bypasses Corpus shields entirely, dealing damage directly to their health pool.

The four base elements combine in pairs to create four combined elements. The order of mods in your mod configuration determines which elements combine: mods are read left-to-right, top-to-bottom, and the first two elemental mods encountered combine into one. This means mod positioning matters — placing Heat before Toxin gives you Gas, while placing Toxin before Heat on a Slash weapon gives the same Gas result. Only by separating elements into non-adjacent mod rows can you control which combine.

Toxin has a unique property: it creates combined elements that also pass through shields. A Corrosive (Electric + Toxin) or Viral (Heat + Cold) damage setup deals its full damage to shielded Corpus enemies without needing to strip shields first. This is distinct from Magnetic, which directly attacks shields.

Best Damage Combos by Faction

FactionRecommended ComboSecondary ElementReasoning
GrineerGrineerViral + SlashHeat or CorrosiveViral halves HP; Slash bleed bypasses Ferrite armor
CorpusCorpusViral + Slash or MagneticToxinToxin bypasses shields; Magnetic shreds shields rapidly
InfestedInfestedCorrosive + Heat or GasSlashInfested lack armor; Gas clouds clear groups; Heat procs burn
CorruptedCorrupted (Void)Radiation + CorrosiveViralRadiation strips Alloy armor on Heavy Gunners; causes faction confusion
SentientsSentientsRadiationVoid damage (Operator)Sentients adapt to damage; Void damage cannot be adapted; Radiation strong baseline

Verdict: Viral + Slash is the meta combination for general content because it works against all flesh-based enemies. Swap to Corrosive when facing heavily armored Grineer Bombards or Heavy Gunners in Steel Path.

Status Effects Reference by Type

  • Impact — Stagger: flinches the enemy briefly. Weak effect in endgame but useful on fast-firing weapons for constant interruption.
  • Puncture — Weakened: target deals 30% less damage for a few seconds. Strong passive defensive bonus especially in solo play.
  • Slash — Bleed: deals 35% of the hit's damage as True Damage over 6 seconds. Stacks infinitely. The strongest physical status in endgame.
  • Heat — Ignite: sets the enemy on fire, dealing DoT and reducing their movement speed. Stacks up to 10 times, each stack refreshing duration.
  • Cold — Freeze: slows enemy movement and attack speed. Chilling Grasp augment for Frost doubles slow effect.
  • Electric — Shock: stuns the enemy and chains electricity to up to 3 nearby targets. Useful for crowd control on grouped enemies.
  • Toxin — Poison: deals DoT that bypasses Corpus shields entirely. Stacks up to 10 times.
  • Viral — Halve HP: reduces the enemy's current health by 50% for the first proc; each additional stack reduces max health further up to 325% total damage increase.
  • Corrosive — Corrode: removes enemy armor stacks (up to 80% armor strip at 10 stacks). Essential for armored Grineer Eximus in Steel Path.
  • Radiation — Confuse: causes the target to become a temporary ally, attacking nearby enemies. High-value crowd control on elite units.
  • Gas — Toxic Cloud: creates a cloud that deals Toxin damage in an area. Excellent for clearing Infested clusters.
  • Magnetic — Disrupt: drains and removes Corpus shields. Can remove up to 75% of max shield per stack.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best damage type in Warframe?

Viral + Slash is the strongest general-purpose damage combination. Viral halves enemy effective health, and Slash bleed procs deal True Damage that bypasses armor entirely. This combination works against all flesh-based enemies (Grineer, Corpus flesh, Infested) and scales into the highest enemy levels.

How do I create combined elements on my weapon?

Equip two elemental mods from a combining pair in your weapon's mod slots. The first two elemental mods the game reads (left to right, top to bottom in the mod grid) will combine. For example, adding Heat and Cold mods creates Viral. If you want to keep base elements separate (like keeping Heat and Toxin from making Gas), place one of them in a slot that is read after a non-combining element.

Does Toxin damage bypass Corpus shields?

Yes. Toxin and any combined element containing Toxin (Corrosive, Gas, Viral) bypasses Corpus Proto Shields and regular shields, dealing damage directly to the enemy's health pool. This makes Toxin-based builds extremely powerful against Corpus enemies.

What damage type should I use against Eidolons?

Eidolons (the giant creatures on the Plains of Eidolon) require Void damage (from the Operator Amp or abilities) to remove their Eidolon Shield, and then physical+elemental damage from sniper rifles (Rubico Prime, Vectis Prime) against their exposed Synovia joints. Radiation is effective against Alloy Armor on Eidolon limbs.

Is Corrosive still good after the armor rework?

Yes. Corrosive strips up to 80% of enemy armor with 10 stacks, making it critical for tanky Grineer Bombards, Nox units, and Steel Path Eximus enemies with Iron Skin. In high-level content where Viral + Slash alone struggles against heavily armored targets, adding Corrosive procs (via a secondary weapon or companion) substantially increases damage.
