How the Decoration Slot System Works

Every piece of armor and most weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds have decoration slots of varying levels. A Level 1 slot can only accept Level 1 decorations, a Level 2 slot can take Level 1 or Level 2 decorations, and so on. Level 4 slots (the highest) accept decorations of any level. This tiering system means that higher-level slots are more versatile and therefore more valuable when evaluating armor pieces.

Each decoration adds one level of a specific skill when socketed. Socketing two copies of the Tenderizer Jewel 2 (a Level 2 decoration that adds one level of Weakness Exploit) into two available Level 2+ slots adds WEX +2 to your build. To reach WEX 3, you need three total points from either armor base skills, decorations, or talismans. Planning your skill caps requires counting points across all sources.

Weapons also have decoration slots, though typically fewer than armor (1–3 slots). These function identically to armor slots and can be used to supplement any skill that armor does not cap. High-rarity weapons often have a Level 3 slot, which is valuable for inserting Tenderizer Jewels or other key Level 3 decorations without relying on armor slots.

How to Get Decorations

The primary decoration sources in Monster Hunter Wilds are monster reward boxes (the items you receive at the end of a hunt), Investigation rewards (secondary reward slots from Investigation quests that offer better rare drop rates), and the Melding Pot. Monster reward boxes drop decorations randomly, with higher-rarity monster hunts yielding higher-rarity decorations. High Rank and Tempered monster investigations are the most efficient regular farming sources.

The Melding Pot is the most targeted decoration acquisition system. It allows you to select a specific category of decoration (Attack-type, Defense-type, Affinity-type, etc.) and combine unwanted decorations and monster materials to produce a random gem from your chosen category. This is not pinpoint crafting — the output is still random within the category — but it lets you farm toward a specific group of gems rather than relying entirely on random drops.

Event Quests are time-limited hunts with boosted decoration drop rates or specific gem rewards as completion bonuses. Certain Event Quests reliably reward rare Level 4 dual-skill decorations as quest completion bonuses (not random drops). Following the Event Quest calendar and completing high-value decoration events is one of the fastest ways to accumulate a full set of key gems.

Highest Priority Decorations to Farm

  1. Tenderizer Jewel 2 (Weakness Exploit +1): the most important offensive decoration in the game. Farm until you have three to cap WEX 3 via decos alone.
  2. Expert Jewel 1 (Critical Eye +1): cheap Level 1 gem that fills affinity gaps; get 6+ copies to cap Critical Eye 3 via decos.
  3. Charger Jewel 2 (Focus +1): essential for Great Sword, Hammer, Switch Axe, Charge Blade — farm two to three for Focus 3.
  4. Critical Jewel 2 (Critical Boost +1): multiplies crit damage; three copies for Critical Boost 3 alongside armor pieces.
  5. Mighty Bow Jewel 4 (Bow Charge Plus): single Level 4 deco that adds the 4th charge level; mandatory for Bow builds.
  6. Maintenance Jewel 2 (Power Prolonger +1): Switch Axe must-have for extended Amped State.
  7. Handicraft Jewel 3 (Handicraft +1): extends weapon sharpness; important for weapons that run out of white sharpness quickly.
  8. Vitality Jewel 1 (Health Boost +1): survival skill; cap Health Boost 3 on non-meta builds or new-to-endgame players.

Level 4 Dual-Skill Decorations

Level 4 decorations are the rarest in the game and are distinguished by containing two different skill bonuses in a single gem. For example, a Challenger Jewel 4 might grant Attack Boost +1 AND Critical Eye +1 simultaneously, providing double the skill efficiency of two separate Level 1 decorations in one Level 4 slot. These dual-skill gems are the most prized items in the endgame for this reason.

The most coveted Level 4 decorations include: the Expert Tenderizer Jewel 4 (Critical Eye +2 + Weakness Exploit +1), which alone provides the equivalent of three separate skill points across two key stats; the Attack Tenderizer Jewel 4 (Attack Boost +2 + WEX +1); and weapon-specific dual gems for high-tier builds. These gems are extremely rare from standard drops but can be targeted via the Melding Pot's premium tiers once you have sufficient rare materials.

Do not hold Level 4 slot armor hostage waiting for the perfect Level 4 gem. Use a Level 3 or lower decoration in the slot initially and swap up when you eventually acquire the dual gem. The build still functions with single-skill gems in Level 4 slots — you just have room for an upgrade when it arrives.

Alchemy Melding — How the Melding Pot Actually Works

Alchemy melding is the Elder Melder NPC's primary function. You provide a combination of monster materials, gold, and (in higher tiers) duplicate decorations as input. In return, you receive a random decoration from a chosen skill category. Categories include Attack, Defense, Affinity, Critical, Status, Element, and Utility — each grouping decorations that grant related skills.

The output is random within the chosen category, but the tier of meld determines the rarity pool. Base Melding outputs Lv 1–2 decorations. Rare Melding outputs Lv 2–3 decorations. Premium Melding (unlocked in late Phase 3) outputs Lv 2–4 decorations with meaningful chances at Lv 4 dual-skill jewels in the chosen category. Premium Melding is the most efficient targeted way to chase Lv 4 jewels — running 50–100 Premium Melds for the Affinity category will typically produce at least one Lv 4 affinity dual-skill jewel.

Melding consumes the input decorations. You can't reverse a meld. This is why duplicates are valuable — feed your 4th, 5th, 6th copy of Tenderizer Jewel 2 (after capping WEX Lv 3) into Melds for Affinity-category outputs that might yield Lv 4 Affinity jewels. Selling duplicate decorations for gold is almost always worse than feeding them to the Meld.

Some Melds have specific material requirements that gate access to rare categories. Tempered monster materials, elder dragon parts, and Lv 4 monster gems are often required for the highest Meld tiers. Stockpile these rare materials during normal Tempered farming and bank them for Premium Meld sessions targeting specific Lv 4 categories.

Best Decorations to Chase Early in High Rank

  1. Tenderizer Jewel 2 (Weakness Exploit Lv 1): Cap at 3 copies for WEX Lv 3. The single highest priority decoration in the entire game. Start collecting these from your first Tempered hunts.
  2. Expert Jewel 1 (Critical Eye Lv 1): Need 5–7 copies for Critical Eye Lv 5–7. Cheap Level 1 decorations that fill remaining small slots in any build. Buy from vendor if available; otherwise pick up from monster rewards.
  3. Critical Jewel 2 (Critical Boost Lv 1): Cap at 3 copies for Crit Boost Lv 3. Multiplies crit damage from 125% to 140%. Mandatory on any crit-focused build.
  4. Charger Jewel 2 (Focus Lv 1): Cap at 3 copies for Focus Lv 3. Mandatory for Great Sword, Hammer, Switch Axe, Charge Blade, Gunlance. Accelerates charge times and phial gauges.
  5. Vitality Jewel 1 (Health Boost Lv 1): Cap at 3 copies for Health Boost Lv 3. The single highest survival ROI skill in the game. +50 max HP for the cost of three Lv 1 slots.
  6. Mighty Bow Jewel 4 (unlocks Bow Charge Lv 4): Only one needed but it's a Lv 4 decoration. Essential for any Bow build. Long-term chase from Tempered drops or Premium Meld.
  7. Maintenance Jewel 2 (Power Prolonger Lv 1): Cap at 3 copies for Power Prolonger Lv 3. Mandatory for Switch Axe, Insect Glaive, Dual Blades (extend Demon Mode), Charge Blade.
  8. Earplugs Jewel 3 (Earplugs Lv 1): Need up to 5 copies for Earplugs Lv 5. High priority for Great Sword, Hammer, Bow — any weapon that gets interrupted by monster roars during commit windows.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove a decoration once it is socketed?

Yes. Decorations can be freely removed and repositioned at any time from the Smithy's Set Decorations menu. There is no cost to removing or repositioning gems, so you can swap decorations between builds freely. This makes it practical to share rare decorations between multiple armor sets by swapping before each hunt.

What is the Melding Pot and when do I unlock it?

The Melding Pot is a crafting system unlocked in High Rank. It is operated by the Elder Melder NPC in the Hub area. You provide decorations you do not need plus certain monster materials, and receive a random decoration from your chosen skill category. Higher-tier melding options unlock as you progress through High Rank content.

Do decorations on weapons work the same as armor?

Yes. Weapon decoration slots function identically to armor slots — the slot level restricts which decoration levels can be inserted, and the skill benefits stack with armor decos and base armor skills. Upgrading weapons can sometimes add or upgrade decoration slots, making higher-rarity weapons more efficient to socket.

Is it worth buying decorations from the market?

Sometimes. The rotating market occasionally sells common Level 1 decorations (Expert, Vitality) at reasonable prices. These are worth buying early in High Rank when you have not yet farmed many gems. Rare Level 3–4 decorations are never sold in the market — those must be obtained from monster rewards, investigations, or the Melding Pot.

How many decoration slots does a full build have total?

A complete build (5 armor pieces + 1 weapon + 1 charm/talisman) in endgame typically has 15–25 total decoration slots across all slot levels. With augmentation adding extra slots to armor pieces, some min-maxed endgame sets can exceed 25 total slots, allowing for nearly complete skill cap coverage through decorations alone.

What's the difference between Tenderizer Jewel 2 and an Expert Tenderizer Jewel 4?

Tenderizer Jewel 2 is a Lv 2 decoration providing one level of Weakness Exploit (a single skill bonus). Expert Tenderizer Jewel 4 is a Lv 4 dual-skill decoration providing two levels of Critical Eye AND one level of Weakness Exploit in a single Lv 4 slot. The Lv 4 dual gem effectively combines three separate single-skill jewel investments into one slot, freeing up two other slots for additional skills. Lv 4 dual jewels are the endgame chase items that elevate builds from 90% optimal to 99% optimal.

How do I get my first Mighty Bow Jewel 4?

Mighty Bow Jewel 4 is a Lv 4 decoration with a very low drop rate (~0.5% per Tempered hunt). The fastest paths: hunt Tempered monsters that bias toward ranged-focused jewels (Tempered Nu Udra is a good target); use Premium Meld in the Utility/Special category once unlocked; check Event Quests — some specifically offer Mighty Bow Jewel as a completion bonus reward. Realistic timeline: 50–150 Tempered hunts unless you get lucky with an Event Quest reward. Plan accordingly if building Bow as your main weapon.
