How to Access the Volcano Dungeon

The Volcano Dungeon is located on Ginger Island, the post-game island accessed by repairing Willy's boat (requires completing the Community Center or purchasing Joja Membership, then finding specific repair items). Once on Ginger Island, travel to the north shore where a large volcano dominates the landscape.

To enter the Volcano, you must pour a Watering Can of water onto the locked door at the base — this triggers a cutscene where a dwarf helps you open it. After the initial opening, the dungeon is freely accessible on every visit to Ginger Island. You do not need to water the door again on subsequent visits.

The dungeon resets every time you enter, generating new floor layouts, enemies, and resource nodes. Unlike the regular Mines, there is no elevator system — you descend floor by floor each visit. If you leave, you start from Floor 1 again on your next entry.

The Volcano Forge — Weapon Upgrades & Enchanting

The Forge on Floor 10 is the primary reason to clear the Volcano Dungeon. It offers two main functions: gemstone upgrades for weapons and tools, and enchanting weapons with magical effects.

Gemstone Upgrades: Place a weapon or tool plus a gemstone plus Cinder Shards into the Forge to add a permanent stat bonus. Each upgrade uses 10 Cinder Shards. You can apply up to 3 gem upgrades per weapon. The gem types and their effects are: Ruby (+10% damage), Aquamarine (+10% critical hit chance), Jade (+10% critical hit power), Emerald (+10% weapon speed), Topaz (+1 Defense), Amethyst (+1 Knockback).

Enchanting: Uses 20 Cinder Shards to apply a random magical enchantment to a weapon or tool. Weapon enchantments include Artful (special move cooldown -50%), Bugkiller (triple damage vs. bugs), Crusader (triple damage vs. mummies/ghosts/skeletons), Vampiric (life steal on hit), and Haymaker (increased drop rate from grass). Tool enchantments include Efficient (25% energy cost reduction) and Powerful (double chop/mine speed).

Infinity Weapons: The Forge is the only place to craft Infinity-tier weapons. Combine a Galaxy weapon (Galaxy Sword, Galaxy Dagger, or Galaxy Hammer) with 3 Galaxy Souls to create the corresponding Infinity weapon. Galaxy Souls are rare drops from Qi's Walnut Room challenges and farm raids.

Volcano Dwarf Shop (Floor 5) — Inventory

  • Ginger Ale: 400g — restores 75 energy, clears negative debuffs, gives +1 Mining. Excellent for surviving the dungeon's later floors.
  • Deluxe Speed-Gro: 100g each — cheaper than Pierre's; stock up in bulk if you need it for your greenhouse.
  • Dragon Tooth: 500g each — Dragon Teeth are rare drops from enemies and also sold here. Used to craft the Tiger Hat vanity item and in several Forge-related crafts.
  • Dwarf Scroll IV: 1,000g — for the Museum collection; completing the Dwarf Scroll set gives a translation dictionary for talking to Dwarfs.
  • Solar Essence: 80g — normally a monster drop; buying from the Dwarf is a reliable source for Iridium Band crafting (which requires 50 Solar Essence).
  • Monster Musk: 1,000g — increases monster spawn rate for a duration; useful if you want to maximize enemy kill counts for drops.
  • Salmonberry (seasonal): Inexpensive food available occasionally to restore energy mid-dungeon.

Surviving the Volcano Dungeon — Tips

The Volcano Dungeon's fire enemies hit harder than Skull Cavern foes and apply a Burning debuff that reduces your Defense significantly. Bring Ginger Ale or other food that clears debuffs. The Immunity stat (from boots) directly reduces how long negative debuffs last — high Immunity boots are valuable here.

Cinder Shards are the dungeon's primary crafting resource, found in orange-glowing rock nodes throughout every floor. Break all Cinder Shard nodes you pass — you need hundreds for full Forge upgrades (3 gem upgrades per weapon = 30 Cinder Shards per weapon, plus 20 per enchant).

The Lava Lurk enemy fires projectiles and stays behind lava flows. A sword's defensive spin move blocks these projectiles effectively. Prioritize Lava Lurks before they stack up — their damage is significant in large groups.

Unlike the Skull Cavern, the Volcano Dungeon has a fixed 10-floor depth. You cannot staircase your way down — each floor must be cleared to descend. This means a full clear takes 30–60 minutes depending on your combat efficiency.

Best Gemstone Upgrades for Each Weapon Type

GoalWeapon TypeRecommended Gems (3 slots)Result
Maximum DPSInfinity Blade (sword)Ruby × 3+30% total damage increase — best for boss and bulk enemy killing
Critical BuildGalaxy DaggerAquamarine × 2 + Jade × 1High crit chance with crit power boost — very high burst on single targets
Defensive / SurvivalAny swordTopaz × 2 + Ruby × 1+2 Defense plus some damage — solid survival-focused build
Speed-FocusedInfinity DaggerEmerald × 2 + Aquamarine × 1Faster swings plus crit chance — excellent for rapid mob clearing

Verdict: Ruby × 3 on the Infinity Blade is the highest sustained DPS configuration for most combat. For the Skull Cavern where crowd control matters, a speed-focused dagger build can outperform the slower-swinging Infinity Blade in raw kill speed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to the Volcano Dungeon?

Travel to Ginger Island (via Willy's repaired boat after unlocking the area), then walk north to the volcano. Use a full Watering Can on the door to open it on your first visit. The dungeon is then freely accessible on all subsequent visits.

What are Cinder Shards and what are they used for?

Cinder Shards are the Volcano Dungeon's unique resource, dropped from orange rock nodes on every floor. They are used exclusively at the Forge for weapon gem upgrades (10 per upgrade) and weapon enchanting (20 per enchant). Stock up a large supply before attempting full Forge upgrades.

Can I get the Infinity Blade without the Forge?

No. The Infinity Blade (and other Infinity weapons) can only be crafted at the Volcano Forge on Floor 10. You need a Galaxy weapon plus 3 Galaxy Souls. Galaxy Souls are obtained through Qi's special challenges and the Statue of True Perfection reward.

What drops Dragon Teeth in the Volcano Dungeon?

Dragon Teeth drop from Royal Serpents (the large serpent-type enemies in the Volcano Dungeon) and occasionally from other volcanic enemies. They can also be purchased from the Volcano Dwarf Shop on Floor 5 for 500g each. Dragon Teeth are used to craft the Tiger Hat vanity item.

Does the Volcano Dungeon reset every day?

Yes. Each time you enter the Volcano Dungeon (or return after leaving), the floor layouts regenerate. There is no save point or checkpoint — you start from Floor 1 every run. This is why reaching Floor 10 efficiently is important; bring enough supplies to clear all 10 floors in one session.
