Stardew Valley Energy Management Guide — Stamina Tips & Efficiency

How Energy Works in Stardew Valley
Your character has an Energy (stamina) bar visible in the bottom-right corner. It starts at 270 points on a new game and can be increased permanently by consuming Stardrops — special items found throughout the game that each add 34 energy to your maximum. The maximum possible energy with all 7 Stardrops is 508 points.
Nearly every physical action costs energy. Watering crops with a Watering Can costs 2 energy per tile (or more if you water multiple tiles with an upgraded can). Mining a rock costs 2 energy per hit. Using a sword in combat costs 0 energy per swing (combat is free). Chopping wood costs 2 energy per chop. The energy costs feel punishing early because 270 base energy runs out fast if you are trying to do everything.
When your energy drops to zero, you cannot use most tools. Your movement slows noticeably and a warning appears on-screen. If you are still active at 2:00 AM and have not gone to bed, you pass out automatically — with negative consequences. You can go to bed voluntarily any time after 6:00 PM by interacting with your bed.
Energy Costs — Common Actions
| Action | Energy Cost per Use |
|---|---|
| Watering Can (1 tile) | 2 energy |
| Watering Can (3 tiles, upgraded) | 3 energy for 3 tiles — 1 per tile |
| Hoe (tilling soil) | 2 energy per tile |
| Pickaxe (breaking stone) | 2 energy per hit |
| Axe (chopping tree stump) | 2 energy per chop |
| Scythe (harvesting) | 0 energy — free action |
| Fishing (casting line) | 8 energy per cast |
| Placing item in machine | 0 energy |
| Combat (sword swing) | 0 energy |
| Bomb use | 0 energy |
Consequences of Running Out of Energy or Passing Out
Running out of energy during the day (hitting 0) causes your character to move at roughly half speed and prevents using tools. You can still walk, open menus, and talk to NPCs, but effective farm work stops. The only recovery options while in-game are eating food or waiting for the night reset.
Passing out at 2:00 AM on your farm is the least severe pass-out scenario — you wake up in bed the next morning with 50% of your normal energy and 1,000g deducted by Harvey for the emergency service call. You lose any items over your inventory limit from that night.
Passing out anywhere else (like in the Mines or Skull Cavern) is more severe. You wake up in the mine entrance or are rescued, losing up to 10% of your gold (capped at 5,000g) and sometimes losing items from your inventory. Always try to return to a safe location before 2:00 AM when deep mining.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get more energy early in Stardew Valley?
Forage Spring Onions from the southwest corner of Cindersap Forest — these spawn daily and restore 13 energy for free. Collect Salmonberries during Spring 15–18 in bulk. Cook Fried Eggs from your Chickens using the kitchen after upgrading your house. These three sources provide solid early energy before you unlock better cooking recipes.
Does passing out permanently affect my character?
No permanent stat loss. You lose some gold (up to 1,000g if you pass out on your farm, more if in the Mines) and wake up with half energy the next day. There is no permanent penalty to your stats or energy maximum from passing out.
What is the maximum energy in Stardew Valley?
The maximum is 508 energy, achieved by collecting all 7 Stardrops. The base starting energy is 270. Each Stardrop adds 34 energy permanently to your maximum.
Does the Gatherer profession affect food energy?
No. The Gatherer profession (Foraging Level 5) doubles foraged item drops, which means more free food from berries and mushrooms, but it does not change the energy value of food items. The energy restored is fixed per food type.
What is the best food to eat before mining?
For the Skull Cavern, Lucky Lunch (+3 Luck) on a high-luck day is the gold standard. Pair with Pumpkin Soup (+2 Luck, +2 Defense) or Spicy Eel (+1 Luck, +1 Speed) for stacked buffs. For regular Mine runs, Cheese or Maple Bar for pure energy, or Roots Platter for the Mining experience buff.
