How to Beat Moon Lord in Terraria — Endgame Strategy & Loot

The Final Boss of Terraria
Moon Lord is the final boss of Terraria, accessed by defeating all four Celestial Pillars during the Lunar Events. He is significantly more powerful than any previous boss, requiring endgame gear and careful preparation to defeat. His drops include some of the most powerful weapons in the game, and he can be farmed indefinitely for them.
Moon Lord has three targetable components: two hands (each with a True Eye of Cthulhu), a head (with a third True Eye of Cthulhu), and a core hidden in his chest that is only exposed when all three eyes are closed. All four eyes must be destroyed before the core becomes vulnerable, and the core must be destroyed to kill him.
Each True Eye of Cthulhu has a 'true' open phase (when it can be targeted and damaged) and a closed phase (immune). Coordinate your DPS to take them out efficiently.
How to Summon Moon Lord
- Defeat the Lunatic Cultist at the Dungeon entrance (kill the four Cultists that spawn there after beating Golem). This initiates the Lunar Events.
- Destroy all four Celestial Pillars: Solar (Flare enemies, west), Vortex (alien bugs, east), Nebula (magic enemies, east-ish), Stardust (stardust enemies, usually spread around).
- Each pillar requires killing 100 of its associated enemies nearby to remove its shield, then destroying the pillar itself.
- After the fourth pillar is destroyed, a countdown begins. Moon Lord spawns at your location approximately 60 seconds later.
- Alternatively, craft a Celestial Sigil (20 Solar/Vortex/Nebula/Stardust Fragments each) to summon Moon Lord directly without doing the pillars again.

Fight Strategy & Targeting Order
Moon Lord spawns above the player. When he descends, his hands and head will be exposed. The recommended targeting order is: Left Hand → Right Hand → Head → Core.
Each True Eye of Cthulhu alternates between an open phase (exposed pupil, vulnerable) and a closed phase (sealed, immune to damage). Focus DPS on whichever eye is currently open. Weapons that pierce or bounce are especially effective because they can damage multiple targets at once.
When all three hands/head eyes are destroyed, Moon Lord's chest opens to reveal the Core. The core is his true health pool — destroying it ends the fight. Meanwhile, the destroyed eyes regenerate as free-floating True Eyes of Cthulhu that pursue and attack you. These should be dodged rather than focused, as they regenerate indefinitely.
The UFO Mount (Cosmic Car Key, dropped from Martian Madness event) is the single best mobility option. It provides unlimited true flight, allowing you to freely dodge all attacks. Build a large open arena or fight in the sky for maximum movement freedom.
Key Attacks to Watch For
- Phantasmal Deathray — Moon Lord charges and fires a sweeping laser beam from his head eye. This is his most dangerous attack. Move perpendicular to the beam's direction to dodge it.
- Phantasmal Sphere — Slow-moving, high-damage spheres fired from his hands. Dodge by moving in an arc around them.
- Phantasmal Eye — Fast-moving projectiles fired from his eyes in burst patterns. Dodge with quick direction changes.
- Moon Bite debuff — Drains healing from Life Steal and potion use. Clear it by using a Nurse NPC (if she is nearby) or endure through it with regeneration.
- True Eye of Cthulhu attack — After an eye is destroyed, it becomes a free-floating entity firing Phantasmal Bolts at you. Prioritize dodging these while attacking the core.

Farming Moon Lord Efficiently
Moon Lord can be farmed indefinitely using Celestial Sigils. Craft them from Celestial Fragments collected during the Lunar Events: 20 of each type (Solar, Vortex, Nebula, Stardust). Defeating Moon Lord with any weapon gives a chance at all his drops — there is no guaranteed drop system, so expect to fight him multiple times to get the specific weapon you want.
His drop rate is roughly 1 in 9 per fight for each specific weapon (with approximately 9 weapons in the pool). Expect around 5–20 kills to collect all unique weapons if aiming for a full collection. The fight takes about 3–5 minutes with optimal gear, so farming 20+ kills is very feasible in an afternoon.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get Celestial Fragments after the pillars are gone?
Once the Lunar Events are complete, re-trigger them by defeating the Lunatic Cultist again. He respawns at the Dungeon entrance 24 in-game hours after being defeated. You can also craft Celestial Sigils from stockpiled fragments to skip the pillar phase entirely.
What is the best weapon to use against Moon Lord?
The Last Prism is generally considered the highest DPS weapon for the Moon Lord fight if you are a mage. For ranged, the Phantasm with Holy Arrows or the S.D.M.G. with Crystal Bullets are top choices. Melee players should use the Terrarian yo-yo or Daybreak. Summoners using the Stardust Dragon can essentially auto-fight with UFO mount mobility.
Can I pause or escape the Moon Lord fight?
You cannot pause or escape Moon Lord once he spawns. He will remain active until either you or he is dead. If you die, Moon Lord despawns and you lose progress. You will need to use another Celestial Sigil or redo the pillar event to fight him again.
Does difficulty affect Moon Lord's drops?
Yes. On Expert Mode, Moon Lord drops additional loot including the Moon Lord Legs (which are a vanity item joke) and has higher stats. On Master Mode, he drops a Master Mode-exclusive relic and a pet. The weapon drop pool is the same across all difficulties, but Expert/Master provides extra items on top.
What buffs should I use against Moon Lord?
Use Ironskin, Endurance, Lifeforce (boosts max HP by 25%), Regeneration, Wrath (10% damage), Rage (10% crit), and class-specific damage potions (Archery, Magic Power, Summoning). The Celestial Shell and Celestial Stone accessories also provide large stat buffs, especially at nighttime when Moon Lord spawns.
