Terraria Progression Guide — Boss Order & Gear Milestones from Start to Endgame

Overview: Two Phases of Terraria

Terraria is split into two distinct phases: Pre-Hardmode and Hardmode. Pre-Hardmode is your early game — you gather resources, build a base, and take down a handful of bosses that gate your access to better gear. Defeating the Wall of Flesh is the trigger that flips the world into Hardmode, permanently changing the underground biomes, enemy difficulty, and available materials.

Hardmode introduces far stronger enemies, new ores (Cobalt/Palladium, Mythril/Orichalcum, Adamantite/Titanium), and a series of bosses that culminate in the Moon Lord — the final boss of the game. Each boss you defeat unlocks new crafting recipes, NPCs, and biome content that would otherwise be inaccessible.

This guide walks you through every major milestone in order, with recommended gear for each stage. Use it as a checklist rather than a rigid ruleset — Terraria rewards exploration and creativity.

Pre-Hardmode Boss Order

  1. King Slime — Spawns randomly or via Slime Crown (50 Gel + Gold/Platinum Crown). Drops Ninja vanity set and Slime Hook. Optional but good practice.
  2. Eye of Cthulhu — Spawns automatically once you have 200+ HP and 10+ defense, or summon with a Suspicious Looking Eye. Drops Demonite/Crimtane Ore.
  3. Eater of Worlds (Corruption worlds) — Summon with Worm Food in the Corruption. Drops Demonite Ore and Shadow Scales for Shadow armor and gear.
  4. Brain of Cthulhu (Crimson worlds) — Summon with Bloody Spine in the Crimson. Drops Crimtane Ore and Tissue Samples for Crimson armor.
  5. Skeletron — Talk to the Old Man at the dungeon entrance at night. Defeating Skeletron unlocks the Dungeon and its powerful loot (Muramasa, Cobalt Shield, Magic Missile).
  6. Queen Bee — Smash a Larva in an Underground Jungle Beehive or craft an Abeemination. Drops Bee armor, Bee's Knees bow, and the Hornet Staff for summoners.
  7. Wall of Flesh — Throw a Guide Voodoo Doll into lava in the Underworld. This is the final pre-Hardmode boss and triggers Hardmode upon death.

Hardmode Boss Order

  1. Mechanical Bosses (any order, but Destroyer first is easiest) — The Destroyer, Twins, and Skeletron Prime. Defeating all three spawns Plantera's Bulb in the Jungle.
  2. Plantera — Smash a Plantera's Bulb in the Underground Jungle. Drops the Temple Key, Pygmy Staff, and powerful weapons like the Flower Pow and Venus Magnum.
  3. Golem — Summon with a Lihzahrd Power Cell at the Jungle Temple altar. Drops powerful accessories including Picksaw, Golem Fist, and Possessed Hatchet.
  4. Duke Fishron (optional, but recommended before Cultist) — Summon by fishing with Truffle Worm in the Ocean. Drops top-tier weapons in all class types.
  5. Empress of Light (optional) — Spawns in the Hallow at night after killing a Prismatic Lacewing. Drops powerful accessories; day kill gives Terraprisma.
  6. Lunatic Cultist — Appears at the Dungeon entrance after defeating the Cultists that appear post-Golem. Summons the Celestial Pillars event.
  7. Moon Lord — After defeating all four Celestial Pillars (Solar, Vortex, Nebula, Stardust), the Moon Lord spawns. Final boss. Drops the most powerful weapons in the game.

Preparing for Hardmode

Before fighting the Wall of Flesh, make sure you have Molten Armor crafted (45 Hellstone Bars), a long horizontal arena built in the Underworld (at least 300 blocks), and a stack of buff potions including Ironskin, Endurance, and Regeneration.

It is also worth containing your Corruption or Crimson biome before entering Hardmode. In Hardmode, these evil biomes spread aggressively through dirt and stone, potentially corrupting your Jungle biome (which is permanent and devastating). Dig 3-block-wide Hellevators on both sides of your evil biomes to stop the spread.

Stock up on money for NPC purchases and reforging accessories at the Goblin Tinkerer. Reforging accessories to Warding (+4 defense each) early in Hardmode can make a huge survivability difference.

Class Difficulty Per Boss

PlanteraPlanteraMelee (Vampire Knives sustain)Summoner (minions get caught on Jungle terrain)Cut arena ceiling for clear minion AI
GolemGolemRanger (Daedalus + Holy Arrows still works)Summoner without Spider StaffVertical platforms exploit Golem's poor pathfinding
Duke FishronDuke FishronMage (Razorblade Typhoon)Melee (constantly knocked into water)Phase 3 (purple Eyes) demands high DPS
Lunar PillarsLunar PillarsRanger (Shroomite + Tsunami)Class that doesn't have matching pillar armor yetEach pillar drops your class's fragment
Moon LordMoon LordMelee (Solar Eruption chains hit all 3 eyes)Summoner solo (harder targeting)Solar Eruption + Beetle Armor is forgiving

Verdict: Ranger has the smoothest universal progression due to Daedalus Stormbow / Megashark / Tsunami / Phantasm consistently outperforming alternatives at their respective phases. Melee is most forgiving due to Beetle and Solar Flare Armor's defense. Mage peaks late with Razorpine and Last Prism. Summoner is the most consistent passive-DPS class but struggles with sustain in early-game boss fights before Bee Armor.

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Fighting the Wall of Flesh in pre-Molten gear: Shadow/Crimson Armor is not enough — craft Molten Armor (45 Hellstone Bars) before attempting WoF.
  • Skipping Queen Bee for summoners: Bee Armor is the only viable pre-HM summoner set; do not skip the Queen Bee fight.
  • Forgetting to contain Corruption/Crimson before entering Hardmode: in HM, evil biomes spread aggressively and can corrupt your Jungle (permanent setback). Dig 3-block-wide hellevators on both sides of evil biomes before WoF.
  • Fighting Plantera without a prepared arena: Plantera's Phase 2 aggression will overwhelm players without a cut-out Jungle arena. Pre-build before activating the bulb.
  • Trying Empress of Light at night with weak gear: Empress is harder than Plantera or Golem in Phase 2. Bring Hardmode endgame armor at minimum.
  • Skipping Old One's Army for summoners: Tavernkeep sentries fill an entire gear slot that summoner desperately wants. T2 OOA gear is worth Defender Medal farming.

Frequently asked questions

Can I skip bosses in Terraria?

You can skip optional bosses like King Slime, Queen Bee, Duke Fishron, and Empress of Light, but each drops materials or accessories that make later content easier. King Slime and Queen Bee are usually worth doing. Duke Fishron and Empress of Light are optional but drop some of the best gear before endgame.

What happens when I defeat the Wall of Flesh?

Defeating the Wall of Flesh permanently activates Hardmode in your world. New ore veins (Cobalt/Palladium, Mythril/Orichalcum, Adamantite/Titanium) spawn underground, the Hallow biome appears, existing enemies become significantly stronger, and new Hardmode enemies begin spawning. The Pwnhammer it drops can break Demon/Crimson Altars to get more ore.

What order should I fight the three Mechanical Bosses in?

The Destroyer is generally the easiest to start with because it is susceptible to piercing weapons and crowd-sourced DPS. The Twins is considered the hardest, so save it for last. Skeletron Prime is mid-difficulty. Defeating all three spawns Plantera's Bulb in the Jungle.

How do I unlock the Celestial Pillars to fight Moon Lord?

Defeat the Lunatic Cultist at the Dungeon entrance (appears after you clear the four Cultists that spawn there post-Golem). This spawns the Celestial Pillars event. Destroy all four pillars — Solar, Vortex, Nebula, and Stardust — and Moon Lord automatically spawns 60 seconds later.

Is there anything to do after Moon Lord?

After Moon Lord, you can farm him for his unique weapon drops (Meowmere, Star Wrath, Terrarian, Last Prism, S.D.M.G., Celebration, Lunar Flare), complete the Bestiary, collect all rare items and vanity sets, unlock achievements, try Expert or Master Mode, or build large creative projects.

How long does a full Terraria playthrough take?

A first-time playthrough typically takes 40-80 hours from world creation to Moon Lord depending on how much you explore. Speedruns can complete Moon Lord in 1-2 hours with optimal strategies. A 'completionist' run (all bosses, all weapons, full Bestiary, 8-Pylon happiness network, Master Mode trophy) easily takes 150-300 hours. The game is designed for long-term play — most players run multiple worlds and multiple characters.

Should I play Normal, Expert, or Master Mode?

Normal Mode for your first playthrough — learn mechanics without dying constantly. Expert Mode for your second playthrough; Expert Treasure Bags drop game-changing items (Worm Scarf, Brain of Confusion, Vampire Knives, Spore Sac) and the difficulty curve feels properly balanced. Master Mode is for experienced players seeking maximum challenge plus the Demon Heart (+1 accessory slot, character-permanent). Many players speed-create a Master Mode world purely to consume the Demon Heart for the slot bonus, then return to their main Expert save.
