Terraria Melee Progression Build — Phase-by-Phase Warrior Guide

Melee Class Overview
Melee is the most resilient class in Terraria. At every stage of the game, melee armor sets provide the highest defense values, giving warriors substantially more survivability than mages, rangers, or summoners. Melee weapons include swords, spears, flails, yoyos, boomerangs, and special projectile melee weapons — a diverse toolkit that covers close-range brawling, mid-range projectiles, and crowd-clearing area damage.
The primary challenge of melee is that many weapons require getting close to enemies, which is dangerous against certain bosses and high-damage foes. This is addressed through two main approaches: weapons that fire projectiles (Terra Blade, Daybreak), yoyo weapons that have reach while keeping you at medium distance, and the superb defensive stats that let you simply tank hits that would kill other classes.
Melee scales dramatically in Hardmode. Night's Edge (pre-HM best sword) becomes True Night's Edge, which combines with True Excalibur into the Terra Blade — one of the game's most iconic weapons. The Solar Eruption (endgame) and Terrarian (Moon Lord drop) give melee a true late-game identity that is both powerful and satisfying to use.
Phase 1: Pre-Boss to First Boss
Your first melee weapon is a Copper or Tin Shortsword. Replace this immediately — craft a Gold or Platinum Broadsword as soon as you collect 8 bars of the respective ore. Broadswords swing in an arc, which is superior for hitting mobile enemies compared to the shortsword's straight thrust.
The Enchanted Sword is an exceptional lucky early find — check underground Enchanted Sword Shrines (stone areas with a sword sticking from a stone formation) for a chance at this weapon, which fires projectile beams on swing. It remains useful for a surprisingly long time.
Shadow Armor (from Eater of Worlds drops — Demonite Bars + Shadow Scales) and Crimson Armor (from Brain of Cthulhu drops — Crimtane Bars + Tissue Samples) are the first real armor milestones. Shadow Armor provides +15% melee speed and +10% melee damage. Crimson Armor provides a health regeneration bonus. Both are strong. Shadow is generally preferred for pure DPS.
Pre-Boss Loadout
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Armor | Shadow Armor or Crimson Armor | Shadow: +15% melee speed, +10% melee dmg; Crimson: health regen |
| Alt Armor | Gold/Platinum Armor | Use until you defeat Eye of Cthulhu or get better drops |
| Weapon 1 | Gold or Platinum Broadsword | Craft from 8 bars; superior arc swing vs shortsword |
| Weapon 2 | Enchanted Sword (if found) | Check underground shrines; fires projectile beams — keep long-term |
| Accessory 1 | Hermes Boots | Movement speed; essential for all melee boss fights |
| Accessory 2 | Cloud in a Bottle | Double jump; massive movement improvement for platforming |
| Accessory 3 | Band of Regeneration | Passive health regen; supplements melee's tanky role |
| Accessory 4 | Shield of Cthulhu | Eye of Cthulhu drop; dash ability for quick repositioning |
Night's Edge: The Pre-Hardmode Crown Jewel
Night's Edge is the best pre-Hardmode sword and a milestone every melee player should achieve before fighting the Wall of Flesh. It is crafted at a Demon Altar from four component swords: the Muramasa (found in locked Gold Chests in the Dungeon — you must defeat Skeletron first), the Blade of Grass (12 Jungle Spores + 12 Stingers from the Jungle), Light's Bane (crafted from Demonite Bars in Corruption worlds) or Blood Butcherer (crafted from Crimtane Bars in Crimson worlds), and the Fiery Greatsword (crafted from Hellstone Bars).
Collecting all four components requires significant world exploration: the Dungeon for Muramasa, the Jungle for Blade of Grass, your world's evil biome for Light's Bane / Blood Butcherer, and the Underworld for Hellstone Bars and Fiery Greatsword. This collection journey is itself a pre-HM progression checkpoint — by the time you have Night's Edge, you are likely ready for the Wall of Flesh.
Terragrim is a rare alternative worth mentioning — found rarely in Crimson Underground chests, it fires a rapid spray of blades that deal excellent DPS for its tier. If you find one, use it. It does not replace Night's Edge for single-target bossing but is exceptional for mob clearing.
Night's Edge Component Guide
| Component Sword | Where to Find | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Muramasa | Muramasa | Locked Gold Chests in the Dungeon | Requires defeating Skeletron to safely access Dungeon; fast attack speed |
| Blade of Grass | Blade of Grass | Craft: 12 Jungle Spores + 12 Stingers (Jungle biome) | Mine Jungle Spores from glowing orbs; Stingers from Hornets |
| Light's Bane | Light's Bane (Corruption) | Craft from 10 Demonite Bars at Iron/Lead Anvil | Corruption worlds only; Crimson worlds use Blood Butcherer instead |
| Blood Butcherer | Blood Butcherer (Crimson) | Craft from 10 Crimtane Bars at Iron/Lead Anvil | Crimson worlds only; replace Light's Bane in this recipe |
| Fiery Greatsword | Fiery Greatsword | Craft from 20 Hellstone Bars at Iron/Lead Anvil | Mine Hellstone in the Underworld; requires Obsidian Skull/Shield to mine |
| Night's Edge | Night's Edge (final) | Craft all four above at Demon/Crimson Altar | Best pre-HM sword; massive range and damage |
Pre-Hardmode Best Loadout (Wall of Flesh Ready)
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Armor | Molten Armor | 45 Hellstone Bars; +17% melee dmg; best pre-HM armor by defense and damage |
| Weapon 1 | Night's Edge | Best pre-HM sword; wide swing and high damage |
| Weapon 2 | Demon Scythe or Space Gun (backup) | Ranged option for the WoF fight's horizontal run |
| Accessory 1 | Obsidian Shield | Knockback immunity — crucial in Underworld for lava protection |
| Accessory 2 | Lightning Boots | Hermes Boots + Rocket Boots + Spectre Boots; movement essential for WoF |
| Accessory 3 | Shield of Cthulhu | Dash for emergency repositioning during WoF Hungry phase |
| Accessory 4 | Warrior Emblem (if dropped) | +15% melee damage; drops from Wall of Flesh — equip if you get it early |
| Accessory 5 | Charm of Myths | Philosopher's Stone + Band of Regeneration; reduces potion cooldown + regen |
Phase 3: Early Hardmode — The Ore Grind
Defeating the Wall of Flesh immediately activates Hardmode. The V-pattern of Hallow and your world's evil biome spreads from the center. Your first goal is mining through the three tiers of Hardmode ores: Cobalt/Palladium (tier 1), Mythril/Orichalcum (tier 2), and Adamantite/Titanium (tier 3). Break three Demon Altars or Crimson Altars with the Pwnhammer (Wall of Flesh drop) to spawn each ore tier.
For weapons, Cobalt and Mythril swords are immediate upgrades but ultimately transitional. The real targets are Hallowed weapons post-mechanical bosses. In the meantime, the Death Sickle (dropped by Reapers in the Pumpkin Moon event, though that is later) and Amarok yoyo (dropped by enemies in the Ice biome in Hardmode) are excellent early HM melee options. The Bladetongue (Crimson fishing catch in Hardmode) fires ichors and is a strong fish-hook melee weapon.
Hallowed Armor is the first melee armor milestone of Hardmode. The Hallowed Plate Mail set (melee variant) provides +8% melee damage, +8% melee speed, and a Shield of Cthulhu-style dodge proc as the set bonus — dodging one attack every ~90 seconds. It is craftable from 54 Hallowed Bars (dropped by all three mechanical bosses).
Early-to-Mid Hardmode Loadout
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Armor | Adamantite or Titanium Armor (melee helmet) | Titanium: Shadow Dodge proc; Adamantite: higher defense |
| Transition Armor | Hallowed Armor (Hallowed Plate Mail) | Craft post-mechanical bosses; dodge proc set bonus |
| Weapon 1 | Amarok | Yoyo dropped by enemies in Ice biome; inflicts Frostburn |
| Weapon 2 | Cobalt/Mythril/Adamantite Sword | Ore-tier sword; transitional until True Night's Edge |
| Weapon 3 | Death Sickle | Reaper drop from Pumpkin Moon; excellent piercing scythe |
| Accessory 1 | Warrior Emblem | +15% melee damage; Wall of Flesh drop; highest priority early HM accessory |
| Accessory 2 | Power Glove | Craft from Feral Claws + Titan Glove; +12% melee dmg and speed |
| Accessory 3 | Wings (any available) | Flight for mobility; even basic Demon/Fairy Wings make a huge difference |
| Accessory 4 | Frostspark Boots | Lightning Boots + Ice Skates; best pre-endgame boots for ground speed |
| Accessory 5 | Ankh Shield | Debuff immunity and knockback immunity; essential for mechanical bosses |
True Night's Edge and True Excalibur: Crafting the Terra Blade
The Terra Blade is the signature melee weapon of mid-to-late Hardmode, crafted from two intermediate swords. True Night's Edge requires your Night's Edge plus 20 Souls of Night (dropped by enemies in Underground Corruption/Crimson in Hardmode), crafted at a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil. True Night's Edge fires a projectile wave on each swing at no extra cost.
True Excalibur requires Excalibur (crafted from 12 Hallowed Bars) plus 24 Chlorophyte Bars (mined from Chlorophyte Ore that grows naturally in Underground Jungle in Hardmode). Craft True Excalibur at a Mythril/Orichalcum Anvil — it fires a green beam projectile.
Combine True Night's Edge and True Excalibur at a Mythril/Orichalcum Anvil to create the Terra Blade. The Terra Blade fires fast-moving green blade projectiles with every swing, giving it substantial range for a melee weapon. It remains relevant for the vast majority of Hardmode and is an excellent choice for learning Moon Lord with. Reforge it to 'Legendary' for maximum damage output.
Terra Blade Crafting Chain
| Item | Materials | Where Crafted | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Night's Edge | Night's Edge | Muramasa + Blade of Grass + Light's Bane/Blood Butcherer + Fiery Greatsword | Demon/Crimson Altar |
| Excalibur | Excalibur | 12 Hallowed Bars (mechanical boss drops) | Mythril/Orichalcum Anvil |
| True Night's Edge | True Night's Edge | Night's Edge + 20 Souls of Night | Mythril/Orichalcum Anvil |
| True Excalibur | True Excalibur | Excalibur + 24 Chlorophyte Bars | Mythril/Orichalcum Anvil |
| Terra Blade | Terra Blade | True Night's Edge + True Excalibur | Mythril/Orichalcum Anvil |
Phase 5: Plantera to Golem — Turtle and Beetle Armor
Defeating Plantera unlocks Golem in the Jungle Temple, and defeating Golem drops Beetle Husks — the key ingredient for Beetle Armor. The upgrade path here is: craft Turtle Armor first (12 Chlorophyte Bars per piece + 3 Turtle Shells from Giant Tortoises in the Jungle), then upgrade each piece with Beetle Husks into Beetle Armor.
Beetle Armor has two chest variants: Beetle Scale Mail and Beetle Shell. Beetle Scale Mail grants a stacking damage buff (up to +30% damage when you deal damage continuously). Beetle Shell grants a stacking damage reduction buff (up to −45% damage when not attacking). For DPS-focused setups during boss fights, Scale Mail is typically better. For defensive setups or learning fight mechanics, Shell is more forgiving.
Weapons in this phase expand significantly. Vampire Knives (from Plantera's Treasure Bag in Expert Mode) restore HP on hit, providing near-infinite sustain. Influx Waver (dropped by Martian Saucer during the Martian Madness event) fires fast piercing swords. The Terra Blade remains excellent through this entire phase.
Post-Plantera to Pre-Moon Lord Loadout
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Armor | Beetle Armor (Scale Mail for DPS) | Stacking +30% damage buff on continuous attacks |
| Alt Helmet/Chest | Beetle Shell | Up to -45% damage reduction; use when learning boss patterns |
| Weapon 1 | Terra Blade | Reforge to Legendary; projectile beams for range advantage |
| Weapon 2 | Vampire Knives (Expert Mode) | Restores health on every hit; incredible sustain against all bosses |
| Weapon 3 | Influx Waver | Martian Saucer drop; fast-piercing swords; strong mid-phase DPS |
| Accessory 1 | Mechanical Glove | +12% melee damage and speed; upgrade of Power Glove at Tinkerer |
| Accessory 2 | Fire Gauntlet | +12% melee dmg and speed + applies On Fire! debuff; upgrade of Mechanical Glove |
| Accessory 3 | Warrior Emblem | +15% melee damage; or upgrade to Destroyer Emblem for more general boost |
| Accessory 4 | Celestial Shell | Massive all-stat boost; werewolf form at night for extra melee bonus |
| Accessory 5 | Ankh Shield | Debuff immunity; essential for all fights |
| Accessory 6 | Fishron Wings | Best pre-endgame wings; Duke Fishron drop |
Phase 6: Lunar Events and Moon Lord — Solar Flare Armor
After defeating the Lunatic Cultist, the four Celestial Pillars spawn. The Solar Pillar is the melee pillar — defeat it to collect Solar Fragments, the material for Solar Flare Armor (the best melee armor in the game). Solar Flare Armor provides the highest defense of any armor in Terraria and its set bonus creates a shield aura that reduces damage from nearby enemies.
Solar Eruption (crafted from 18 Solar Fragments + 14 Luminite Bars) is the premier melee crowd-clear weapon — it fires a chain that extends and deals continuous damage to anything it passes through. Against stationary or slow targets like pillars and Golem, it deals devastating DPS. Daybreak (18 Solar Fragments + 14 Luminite) fires flaming javelins that stick to enemies and deal continued fire damage.
The Terrarian (Moon Lord drop, ~11% chance) is the best yoyo in the game. It fires a homing tornado projectile that seeks and damages enemies independent of the yoyo itself, allowing you to fight one target while the tornado hits another. Meowmere (Moon Lord drop) has the highest base damage of any sword and fires bouncing cat projectiles, but Solar Eruption is generally higher practical DPS for clearing groups.
Moon Lord Melee Loadout
| Slot | Recommended pick | Why / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Armor | Solar Flare Armor | Highest defense in game + shield aura set bonus; crafted from Solar Fragments |
| Weapon 1 | Solar Eruption | Chained flail; highest melee DPS weapon for sustained fights |
| Weapon 2 | Terrarian | Moon Lord drop; homing tornado secondary makes dodging easier |
| Weapon 3 | Daybreak | Flaming javelins that stick and burn; excellent on Moon Lord's true eyes |
| Accessory 1 | Fire Gauntlet | +12% melee dmg and speed + On Fire! debuff on all attacks |
| Accessory 2 | Celestial Shell | Werewolf form at night = bonus melee stats; all-stat boost always active |
| Accessory 3 | Destroyer Emblem | +10% all damage and +8% crit; better general boost than Warrior Emblem alone |
| Accessory 4 | Ankh Shield | Debuff immunity; Moon Lord inflicts many debuffs |
| Accessory 5 | Solar Wings | Best flight; crafted from Solar Fragments |
| Accessory 6 | Charm of Myths | Reduced potion cooldown + health regen; Golem drop component |
| Reforge Strategy | Menacing on all (+4% dmg each) | 6 × Menacing = +24% damage; Warding (+4 def) is alternative for defensive play |
Yoyo Build: The Melee Alternative
Yoyos are a distinct melee subtype that provide mid-range damage without requiring direct contact. They scale well throughout the game with the Amarok (Ice biome, early HM), Eye of Cthulhu yoyo (craftable), The Eye of Cthulhu drops Durendal (from Hallowed Mimics) and Terrarian at the end. The Yoyo Bag accessory (crafted from Yoyo Glove + White String + Counterweight) creates two counterweights and a duplicate yoyo — effectively tripling your damage output.
Yoyo builds pair well with the Hoverboard (Wings variant that provides horizontal hovering) for maintaining optimal range while fighting. The main disadvantage is lower per-hit damage compared to true melee swords, but the sustained DPS from three simultaneous yoyo entities is extremely competitive.
Terrarian yoyo (Moon Lord drop) is the endgame yoyo that fires homing tornadoes. Combined with Yoyo Bag, you have three yoyos plus two tornadoes active simultaneously — the visual chaos belies genuinely excellent DPS that competes with Solar Eruption in many scenarios.
Essential Potions for Melee Builds
- Ironskin Potion — +8 defense for 8 minutes; the most important melee buff potion. Always active in boss fights.
- Endurance Potion — 10% damage reduction for 4 minutes; stacks with Beetle Shell's reduction.
- Lifeforce Potion — +25% max health; dramatically increases your HP ceiling in all fights.
- Regeneration Potion — Extra health regen; stacks with Vampire Knives for incredible sustain.
- Wrath Potion — +10% damage; general DPS increase.
- Swiftness Potion — +25% movement speed; helps with dodging in all boss arenas.
- Ale or Sake — Warrior's Brew: +4% melee damage and speed, −2 defense; minor DPS boost at low cost.
Beetle Scale Mail vs. Beetle Shell
| Variant | Set Bonus | Best For | Verdict | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beetle Scale Mail | Beetle Scale Mail | Stacking +10/20/30% damage when attacking consecutively | DPS races, bosses you are comfortable dodging, speedruns | Higher ceiling when maintained; drops if you stop attacking |
| Beetle Shell | Beetle Shell | Stacking -15/30/45% damage reduction when not attacking | Learning boss patterns, high-pressure fights, defensive survival | More forgiving; stack resets when you start attacking |
Verdict: Use Beetle Scale Mail once you know a boss's patterns and can attack continuously. Use Beetle Shell when learning fights or when a boss has dangerous burst phases. Both are valid — swap between fights as needed.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best pre-Hardmode armor for melee?
Molten Armor is the best pre-Hardmode melee armor. Craft it from 45 Hellstone Bars (mined in the Underworld with an Obsidian Skull or Shield to resist the lava heat). The set provides +17% melee damage and the highest defense of any pre-Hardmode armor. Use Shadow or Crimson Armor as your interim set before Molten.
How do I craft the Terra Blade?
Terra Blade requires True Night's Edge and True Excalibur, combined at a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil. True Night's Edge = Night's Edge + 20 Souls of Night. True Excalibur = Excalibur (12 Hallowed Bars) + 24 Chlorophyte Bars. Night's Edge itself requires Muramasa (Dungeon), Blade of Grass (Jungle), Light's Bane or Blood Butcherer (evil biome), and Fiery Greatsword (Underworld).
Is melee good against Moon Lord?
Yes. Solar Eruption is one of the best Moon Lord weapons — its chaining attack constantly hits all three of Moon Lord's eyes and body simultaneously. Combine with Solar Flare Armor's high defense and the Celestial Shell for a very tanky, high-DPS setup. Daybreak's stacking fire DoT is excellent for the True Eyes phase. Vampire Knives (Expert Mode) provide sustain if needed.
Should I use Beetle Scale Mail or Beetle Shell?
Beetle Scale Mail (stacking +30% damage) is superior for DPS but requires continuous attacking to maintain stacks. Beetle Shell (stacking -45% damage reduction) is defensive and activates when you stop attacking. Most experienced players use Scale Mail for bosses they can handle. New players or players learning a difficult fight should use Shell for its safety margin.
What reforge should I use on melee weapons?
Swords and most melee weapons should be reforged to 'Legendary' — it adds +15% damage, +5% critical, +10% speed, and +4 knockback. Yoyos and flails also benefit from Legendary. Accessories should be reforged to 'Menacing' (+4% damage) for maximum offense, or 'Warding' (+4 defense) for survivability. Reforge all 6 accessories to one type for a consistent bonus.
What is the best melee weapon before getting Terra Blade?
In early Hardmode (before mechanical bosses), Amarok yoyo from the Ice biome is excellent. During mechanical boss phase, the Cobalt/Mythril/Adamantite swords are standard. After defeating all three mechanical bosses, you have the materials to begin crafting toward Terra Blade. Death Sickle from Pumpkin Moon is also a very strong option if you can access that event.
