Valheim Weapon Tier List — Best Weapons by Biome and Build

By LootLore EditorsPublished Updated
Valheim weapon tier list lineup showing Mistwalker, Frostner, Black Metal Atgeir, and Flametal sword

How to Read This Tier List

Valheim weapon power is gated by biome tier and crafting station upgrades, not by raw weapon name alone. A fully upgraded Bronze Atgeir outperforms an unupgraded Iron Sword for most of the Black Forest era. Every tier ranking below assumes the weapon is at its maximum quality level for the player's current forge tier — a mismatch here flips entire matchups.

Damage type also matters more than headline DPS. Skeletons take bonus damage from blunt weapons, Greydwarves take bonus damage from fire, Wolves take bonus damage from frost. The 'best' weapon for a fight is often the one whose damage type matches the target's weakness, not the highest base damage number. Tier picks below note damage type matchups where they meaningfully affect ranking.

Finally, weapon archetype matters. Swords are clean single-target tools, Atgeirs sweep multiple targets and break combos, maces stagger and crush armor, polearms keep distance, bows handle ranged threats, and magic staves enable the late-game Eitr playstyle. A well-stocked Viking carries 3-4 weapons across multiple archetypes, not one 'best' weapon for everything.

Finewood BowS (Black Forest)Troll kiting + Greydwarf Shaman picksCrafted at Workbench; uses Finewood from Birch trees

Verdict: Bronze Atgeir is the clear meta melee pick for the Black Forest — its sweep clears Greydwarf packs and breaks Troll combos. Pair with Finewood Bow for ranged. Mace only earns a slot if you are actively farming Burial Chambers.

Swamp and Mountain Weapons

Flametal swordS (Ashlands)Endgame melee metaReplaces Mistwalker as primary; pair with Mistwalker backup for slow utility
Flametal AtgeirS (Ashlands)Charred patrol sweeps + adds on FaderBest Ashlands AoE weapon for fortress clears

Verdict: From Plains onward, Atgeir + sword pair is the universal meta. Mistwalker is the most important weapon unlock in the entire game — frost slow procs change how the Mistlands and Ashlands are played. Flametal sword and Atgeir close out the tier list; Mistwalker stays in the loadout even after Flametal unlocks because frost slow utility never goes obsolete.

Best Weapons Across All Tiers — Top 10 Picks

  1. Mistwalker — best general-purpose melee weapon in the game; frost slow procs make every late-game fight more survivable.
  2. Flametal sword — endgame raw DPS leader; replaces Mistwalker as the primary Ashlands weapon.
  3. Black Metal Atgeir — best AoE melee weapon from Plains onward; carries the entire mid-to-late game.
  4. Staff of Protection — bubble shield is the single most impactful magic spell for survivability; slot it even on melee builds.
  5. Frostner — best Mountain weapon; frost slow + spirit damage handles Wolves, Fenrings, and lingering Mountain ghosts.
  6. Iron Mace — best Swamp weapon; blunt bonus melts Draugr and the entire Bonemass fight.
  7. Draugr Fang — best ranged bow for most of mid-to-late game; high draw damage and reasonable craft cost.
  8. Bronze Atgeir — best Black Forest weapon; sweep clears Greydwarf packs and stays useful until Iron unlocks.
  9. Staff of Embla — best magic damage staff for the entire Mistlands tier; defines the magic build playstyle.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best overall weapon in Valheim?

Mistwalker is the best general-purpose weapon for most of the game's late tiers because its frost slow procs make virtually every fight more survivable. Flametal sword passes it in raw DPS for the Ashlands, but most players still keep Mistwalker on a backup slot for the utility. If you can only craft one late-game weapon, make it Mistwalker first, then add Flametal once you have a stable Ashlands beachhead.

Should I use an Atgeir or a sword as my primary weapon?

Both. Atgeirs sweep multiple targets and break enemy combos with the secondary attack — invaluable for Greydwarf packs, Fuling groups, Charred patrols, and any add-heavy boss fight. Swords deal more sustained single-target DPS and are easier to weave with shield blocks. A well-equipped Viking carries both: Atgeir for pack control, sword for single targets and bosses. From Plains onward this combo is the meta.

Is Frostner still good in Mistlands and Ashlands?

Frostner is still useful for specific matchups (Wraiths, undead, frost-vulnerable Mistlands enemies) but is no longer your primary weapon by Mistlands. Mistwalker provides better frost slow utility on a sword frame, and Krom or Flametal options outperform Frostner for general single-target. Keep Frostner on a backup slot if you have inventory room — it shines occasionally — but do not invest forge upgrades into Frostner past Mountain era.

How important is the Mighty Bow equivalent for Valheim bows?

Valheim bows do not have a Mighty Bow Jewel system like other games — bow damage scales with the bow tier, arrow tier, and Bow skill level (from use). The main optimization levers are: upgrade to Spinesnap or the best Ashlands bow available; craft Needle Arrows or the best arrow type for your biome; and level Bow skill by using the bow regularly. Skill level adds meaningful damage at higher tiers, so swap your bow into the hotbar for chip damage between melee swaps to keep skill climbing.

Should I commit to a magic build or melee build?

Most players run melee primary with a magic offhand (typically Staff of Protection for the bubble shield). Pure magic builds are powerful but require longer crafting chains (Black Forge plus Eitr Refinery plus Galdr Table plus multiple staves) and squishier armor. The hybrid is the meta for first Mistlands and Ashlands campaigns. Pure magic builds shine on subsequent playthroughs once Refined Eitr is no longer a bottleneck.

Which shield is best at each tier?

Wood Shield (Meadows) → Round Shield (Black Forest) → Banded Shield (Swamp; mandatory for Bonemass) → Silver Shield (Mountain) → Black Metal Shield (Plains; carries through Mistlands and into Ashlands). Bucklers (Iron Buckler, Carapace Buckler) are alternatives for parry-focused builds — higher parry multiplier but lower block value. Most players take the tower shield route for safer block-counter play.

Are throwable spears worth keeping after early game?

Yes for specific situations. Throwable spears retain utility through the entire game for sniping Greydwarf Shamans, Wraiths, and other priority targets when you do not want to swap to a bow. Krom-tier or late-game throwing options keep them relevant. Most veterans stop slotting spears as a primary after the Bronze era but keep one in inventory for situational throws — especially when stamina is low and a bow draw would be too slow.
