How to Beat Eikthyr in Valheim — First Boss Guide & What He Drops

Who Is Eikthyr?
Eikthyr is the first boss in Valheim, found in the Meadows biome. He is a massive stag with glowing red eyes, lightning chains binding his antlers, and a commanding presence. Despite being the first boss, underprepared players can be easily killed — he hits hard and his AoE attacks require active dodging.
Defeating Eikthyr is the essential first step in Valheim's progression. He drops Hard Antlers, the only material needed to craft the Antler Pickaxe — which is required to mine copper and tin ore in the Black Forest. Without the Antler Pickaxe, Bronze Age gear is completely inaccessible.
Hugin the raven (your tutorial crow companion) will point you toward Eikthyr's altar early in the game. You can also find Vegvisir runestones in the Meadows or Black Forest that mark Eikthyr's location on your map.
How to Find and Summon Eikthyr
- Find Eikthyr's altar — a large stone structure with glowing runes in the Meadows biome. Hugin will guide you there, or read Vegvisir runestones found in Black Forest Burial Chambers.
- Collect 2 Deer Trophies by hunting deer in the Meadows. Deer are killed with a bow — headshots or hitting them while they are unaware triggers an instant kill (they are very skittish).
- Place both Deer Trophies on the altar by pressing E (interact) while holding them.
- Step back — Eikthyr spawns from a lightning strike on the altar immediately after the trophies are placed.
- The fight begins. Eikthyr will engage you immediately in melee range.

| Ranged Weapon | Bow (Wood Bow) with Fire Arrows | Fire Arrows crafted from Wood + Feathers + Resin; Eikthyr is weak to fire |

Eikthyr's Attack Patterns
- Lightning AoE Slam — Eikthyr rears up and slams his front legs into the ground, releasing a ring of lightning that deals massive damage. Dodge sideways or sprint away from the impact zone. Has a wind-up telegraph — dodge when you see him rear up.
- Forward Lightning Bolt — He charges a lightning bolt from his antlers and fires it straight at you. Sidestep left or right to dodge. This is his most telegraphed attack.
- Antler Charge — Eikthyr lowers his head and charges forward. Roll perpendicular to his charge direction. Does high physical damage on hit.
- Basic Melee Stomp — A simple stomp or headbutt at close range. Block with shield or backstep.
Fight Strategy
Eikthyr's weakness is fire — fire arrows deal extra damage to him. Open the fight at range with your bow, landing fire arrows to build up damage. Keep moving in a wide circle to avoid his lightning bolt and slam attacks. When he begins charging or slamming, dodge away immediately.
If you get into melee range, use your shield to parry his basic stomps (parrying staggers him briefly, allowing a power attack follow-up). Avoid getting hit by his AoE lightning slam at all costs — it deals high damage and the knockback can disorient you.
The fight is forgiving compared to later bosses, but do not get overconfident. Running low on food buffs or getting combo'd by lightning attacks can kill you quickly. Eat all three food items before the fight starts.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I find Eikthyr's altar?
Eikthyr's altar is always located in the Meadows biome. Hugin (the raven) guides you there early in the game. You can also find Vegvisir runestones in the Black Forest or Meadows that mark his location on your map when interacted with. The altar appears as a large stone structure with glowing orange runes.
Why is Eikthyr killing me easily?
Eikthyr hits hard if you are in entry-level gear. Make sure you have: Leather Armor fully upgraded (level 4 if possible), all three food slots filled with cooked food, and a shield for parrying. His lightning AoE slam is the biggest threat — practice dodging it. If dying repeatedly, gather better food (Cooked Meat is much better than just berries) and upgrade your armor.
Do I need fire arrows to beat Eikthyr?
Fire arrows deal bonus damage due to his weakness, but they are not strictly required. A fully upgraded Wood Bow with regular Flinthead Arrows or Wooden Arrows can work. Fire Arrows are easy to craft (Wood + Feathers + Resin from Pine Trees in Black Forest), so they are worth making for the damage bonus.
What is the Antler Pickaxe used for?
The Antler Pickaxe is the first pickaxe in Valheim and is required to mine ore nodes. You cannot mine Copper, Tin, Iron, Silver, or any other ore without it (or a better pickaxe). It can also dig earth, which is used for flattening terrain, digging channels, and building raised earthworks. Craft it immediately after defeating Eikthyr.
Can Eikthyr respawn or be fought again?
Yes. Eikthyr (and all bosses) can be re-summoned at their altar by offering the required trophies again (2 Deer Trophies). This allows farming his Hard Antler drop if needed, though one kill provides 3 Hard Antlers which is enough for 3 Antler Pickaxes — far more than you need.
