How to Get the Fishing Rod

The Fishing Rod is purchased from Haldor, the traveling merchant, for 350 Gold Coins. Haldor appears as a fixed location in the Black Forest biome on each world seed — his location is marked on your map with a bag icon once you get close enough to his camp. Listen for his distinctive jingle when nearby.

To collect Gold Coins, loot chests in Burial Chambers and Sunken Crypts, kill Fulings and Fuling Shamans (they carry coins), find buried treasure (Wishbone helps), and sell trophy items to Haldor himself. 350 coins is a manageable sum by mid Black Forest era.

Fishing Bait is also purchased from Haldor for 10 coins per 10 bait (1 coin per piece). Always buy a large stockpile — 100+ bait for a serious fishing session. Different bait types are introduced in later biomes for catching specific fish.

How to Fish — Step by Step

  1. Equip the Fishing Rod and have Fishing Bait in your inventory (it is consumed automatically).
  2. Stand near a body of water — ocean, river, or lake. Face the water.
  3. Left-click (attack) to cast. Hold for longer casts, release to throw the line. The bobber lands with a splash animation.
  4. Watch the bobber — when a fish bites, it will dip below the surface with a distinct animation and sound.
  5. Right-click immediately when the bobber dips to set the hook. If you miss the timing, the fish escapes.
  6. Hold right-click and slowly reel in. Watch your Stamina bar — reeling drains Stamina. Pause reeling if Stamina gets too low.
  7. The fish appears in your inventory as a raw fish item (e.g., Perch, Pike, Salmon).
  8. Cook raw fish on a Cooking Station over fire to produce Cooked Fish.

Fishing as a Food Strategy

Fishing is one of the easiest ways to get high-quality food in early Valheim. Cooked Perch or Pike provide +45-50 HP and +25 Stamina for 20 minutes — comparable to Sausages or Turnip Stew but requiring only a fishing rod and bait, no farming or special crafting setup.

In the early game (Meadows and Black Forest), a regular fishing session in a river or lake can stock dozens of fish that translate into many hours of quality food buffs. This is especially valuable before you have a Cauldron or when food-crafting materials are scarce.

Cooked Fish is also an ingredient in some specific food recipes including fish-based stews. Keep a steady stock of cooked fish in your food chest for general adventuring and exploration.

Efficient Fishing Session Setup

Location
Any river, lake, or ocean shore
Start point
Haldor's camp — buy Fishing Rod + 100+ Fishing Bait
Yield
15-30 fish per hour-long session at a productive fishing spot

Steps

  1. Find a calm river or lake near your base with good fish density — rivers in the Black Forest are excellent early locations.
  2. Build a small wooden dock or stand on the shore for stable casting position.
  3. Eat high-Stamina foods before your session — reeling in large fish drains Stamina heavily.
  4. Cast toward deep water (deeper areas have better fish density).
  5. Wait 10-30 seconds per bite. Use the time to look around for resource gathering opportunities.
  6. Once you have 20+ fish, return to base and cook them all at once on your Cooking Station.
  7. Store Cooked Fish in a designated food chest for easy access.

Tips

  • Fishing in rain improves bite rate slightly.
  • Stand on a rock or dock for stable casting — rolling terrain can interfere with aim.
  • The Fishing skill (in your character skills) increases with each fish caught. Higher skill means less Stamina per reel and better bite detection.
  • Trophy fish (rare large variants of regular species) can be mounted as decorations and provide very large food buffs when cooked.

Advanced Bait Types from Haldor

  • Fishing Bait (basic) — 10 coins per 10; works for most common fish in Meadows, Black Forest, and Ocean.
  • Cold Bait — Unlocked later; catches Mountain-biome fish like Salmon in cold rivers.
  • Swamp Bait — Catches swamp-specific fish in murky swamp waters.
  • Cave Bait — For underground water sources with unique cave fish species.
  • Hot Bait — Plains ocean fishing for Grouper and other warm-water species.
  • Deep Bait — Ocean deep-sea fishing for Anglerfish and large ocean species.
  • Special bait types are sold by Haldor after progressing through the game — check his inventory after each major boss kill, as new items appear.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Haldor spawn on every map?

Haldor spawns at a fixed location in the Black Forest biome that is seeded by your world. It is the same location every time you visit the same world. His camp appears as a blue bag icon on the minimap when you get within range. Exploration is necessary to find him on a new world — he is always in the Black Forest but the specific coordinates vary by seed.

What can I sell to Haldor for gold coins?

Haldor buys various trophy items. Items he purchases include: Deer Hide, Neck Tail, Leather Scraps, Greydwarf Eye, Thistle, Dandelion, Raspberry, Blueberry, Mushroom, Trophy items from various enemies, and more. Check his 'Sell' tab to see current purchase options. Trophy farming (killing rare enemies) is a reliable way to accumulate gold.

How do I know when a fish bites?

When a fish bites, the bobber dips below the water surface with a distinct visual animation and makes a splash/pop sound. The timing window to right-click and set the hook varies — typically 0.5-1 second. Watch the bobber attentively and react quickly when it dips. Missing the bite means the fish escapes and you must recast. The fishing skill improves your bite window over time.

Is fishing worth doing in Valheim?

Yes, especially in early and mid game. Fish provide high-quality food buffs that are easy to obtain without complex farming setups. In late game, specific fish types provide unique food buffs comparable to advanced cooked meals. The Fishing skill also makes fishing progressively easier. The main investment is buying the rod (350 gold) and keeping bait stocked (cheap at Haldor).

Can I fish in any body of water?

You can cast in any body of water, but fish only appear in appropriate habitats. Ocean fish are found offshore, freshwater fish in rivers and lakes, and some biome-specific fish require biome-appropriate water (swamp water for Pufferfish, mountain rivers for Salmon). If you are casting and getting no bites after 1-2 minutes, try a different location or water type.
