How Songs and Melodies Work

Every attack with the Hunting Horn generates a colored note (Purple, Red, Blue, White, Yellow, Green, or Aqua depending on the weapon) that appears in the Melody Gauge at the top of the screen. By stringing together the correct sequence of notes matching a specific melody pattern, you complete a melody — and can then activate it with the Performance action (Triangle+Circle or the melody button).

Each Hunting Horn weapon has its own unique set of available notes and a specific list of melodies those notes can form. You check a weapon's melody list at the weapon info screen in the Smithy. The key to HH mastery is learning which attacks generate which notes on your specific weapon, then routing your combat attacks to naturally build the melodies you want without halting your combat flow.

Melodies have a fixed buff duration (typically 90–180 seconds depending on the song). After activating a melody, you can immediately play a Recital by performing the action again — Recital doubles the remaining duration of all currently active buffs from that performance. Skilled HH hunters Recital immediately after every new Performance to maximize total buff uptime.

Most Valuable Songs to Build Around

  • Attack Up (L): The highest-priority offensive buff — adds flat attack to you and all party members within range. Stack with Mega Demondrug for massive attack totals.
  • All Rounder: Increases attack and defense simultaneously — excellent all-purpose buff for mixed parties.
  • Earplugs: Negates monster roars, letting you attack during roar animations instead of flinching. One of the most time-saving buffs in the game.
  • Stamina Use Reduced: Critical for Bow and Dual Blades partners — lets them dodge more aggressively.
  • Wind Pressure Negated: Removes knockback from wind blasts, allowing free attack on winged monsters during flap attacks.
  • Recovery Up: Increases healing received — potions and Palico healing restore more HP, extending party survivability.
  • Divine Protection: Random chance to reduce incoming damage to zero — passive team-wide survival buff.
  • Health Boost: Directly increases party max HP — rarely found on horns but extremely powerful in co-op.

Combat Mechanics and Attack Combos

Despite the support reputation, the Hunting Horn in Monster Hunter Wilds deals very competitive damage. Its attacks have high motion values, generate reliable KO damage through blunt impact, and the Earthshaker move creates a large AoE impact that staggers monsters repeatedly. Playing HH purely as a buff platform while never attacking is a disservice to the weapon's damage potential.

The standard ground combat loop is: Triangle (forward swing, generates note 1) → Triangle (back swing, generates note 2) → Circle+Triangle (powerful finisher, generates note 3) → Triangle+Circle (Performance if melody is ready). This four-hit sequence builds melodies naturally while dealing damage. You don't need to pause combat to generate melodies — they accumulate through normal attacks.

The Earthshaker is a signature HH move initiated by pressing R+Circle (or via the weapon's heavy combo finisher) that creates a massive ground slam with radial AoE damage. Earthshaker is your primary KO tool — its blunt impact triggers the stagger/KO meter more than any other HH move. Position it near the monster's head for maximum KO efficiency.

Solo vs. Team Play Considerations

In solo play, the Hunting Horn's buffs apply only to yourself, making them effectively free self-buffs on top of your regular attacks. Solo HH play should emphasize weapons with strong self-buff melodies: Self-Improvement (universal, always available), Attack Up, and Earplugs. The solo HH hunter who focuses on damage while incidentally maintaining their own buffs performs extremely well — in many tests, solo HH time-to-kill rivals the Long Sword.

In multiplayer, the HH's value multiplies with every additional player. Attack Up (L) applied to four hunters is a massive collective DPS boost. Earplugs for the entire party saves enormous time over a full hunt session. When running multiplayer, prioritize horns with team-oriented songs: Attack Up, Defense Up (L), Earplugs, and Stamina Use Reduced offer the broadest benefit.

Communication matters in multiplayer HH play. Let your team know you're running Earplugs so they can expect to attack through roars. Position your Echo Bubbles in the monster's general engagement area so teammates pass through them naturally and receive the buff re-application without needing to stand in them deliberately.

Key Skills for Hunting Horn Hunters

  • Horn Maestro Lv 2: Extends the duration of all activated melodies by 50%. This effectively doubles your buff uptime and is the single most important HH-specific skill.
  • Constitution Lv 3: Reduces stamina drain from HH's sliding and repositioning moves — important for maintaining mobility during long performance animations.
  • Attack Boost Lv 7: Flat attack addition that stacks multiplicatively with your own Attack Up melody — strong synergy.
  • Wide-Range Lv 5: Shares your own healing item consumption with nearby teammates — useful for ultra-support builds but cuts into your personal DPS time.
  • Weakness Exploit Lv 3: Standard 50% affinity on weak zones — works perfectly with HH since you're already targeting the head for KO damage.
  • Slugger Lv 3: Increases KO value of blunt attacks — accelerates monster knockouts via Earthshaker and heavy swings.

Frequently asked questions

Does Hunting Horn do good damage or is it purely support?

Hunting Horn does excellent damage in Monster Hunter Wilds. Its motion values are high, Earthshaker creates strong AoE KO damage, and the weapon naturally deals blunt damage that staggers and knocks out monsters. The buffs are a bonus on top of strong offensive attacks — not a substitute for them. Skilled HH players can rival the DPS of many other weapon types while providing team buffs.

Do Hunting Horn buffs apply to the whole team?

Yes. When you perform a melody, all hunters within hearing range receive the buff. Echo Bubbles left on the ground after Performance also grant buffs to any hunter who moves through them. In multiplayer, this means the entire party receives Attack Up, Earplugs, or whatever your melody provides.

Can I play Hunting Horn in solo?

Absolutely. Solo HH play is effective because your buffs apply to yourself for free while you deal strong blunt damage. Choose horns with powerful self-buff songs (Attack Up, Earplugs) and focus on Earthshaker for KO damage. Solo HH time-to-kill is competitive with many other weapons when played actively.

What is Recital and should I always use it?

Recital is re-performing the same melody immediately after the first Performance. It doubles the remaining duration of all currently active buffs from that performance without consuming new notes. Yes — always Recital immediately after every Performance. It costs only a moment of animation time and effectively doubles your buff uptime at no additional note cost.

How do I know which notes my attacks generate?

Check the weapon info screen in the Smithy or in the Status menu mid-hunt. It shows the note color for each attack button. After a few hunts with the same weapon, the note generation becomes intuitive. Many experienced HH players also use the color-coded note display on screen during combat to confirm their melody-building progress in real time.

What is the best Hunting Horn for beginners?

Look for a horn that has Attack Up (L) in its melody list — this is the most universally valuable buff. The early-game Jagras Horn and Bone Horn variants both offer straightforward note sequences and Attack Up melodies. Avoid horns with complex 4-note melodies until you're comfortable with the basics.
