Best Coal Spawn Locations

Coal nodes are visually distinct from standard Ore nodes — they are black-colored boulder clusters rather than the grey-brown standard ore. Two primary biomes contain high concentrations of coal nodes: the desert region in the center-east of the map and the Mount Obsidian volcanic biome in the western volcanic area.

The desert biome coal deposits are accessible around Level 20–25 without special environmental gear. The area around the Sealed Realm of the Crusty waypoint (approximately coordinates 200, -290) has a dense cluster of coal nodes that respawn on a fixed timer. Running this cluster in a loop takes roughly 5–8 minutes and yields 15–25 coal per run depending on tool quality.

Mount Obsidian has larger and denser coal node clusters but requires Heat Resistance gear (Level 2 minimum) to avoid constant heat damage. Access this area at Level 30+ with proper preparation. The volcanic plateau around coordinates -300, -550 contains 8–12 coal nodes in a compact area — among the highest manual farming densities in the game.

Desert Coal Farming Route

Steps

1. Fast-travel to the Sealed Realm of the Crusty waypoint in the desert biome.
2. Mount your Pal and head northeast — black coal nodes are visible on the plateau approximately 100m from the waypoint.
3. Mine each coal node using your best pickaxe (Metal Pickaxe or better for faster mining).
4. Continue east and south — there are 5–8 coal nodes scattered across this plateau.
5. After mining all nodes in the cluster, run south toward the smaller cluster near coordinates 220, -320.
6. Mine the remaining nodes and return to waypoint.
7. Coal nodes respawn on a timer (approximately 15–20 minutes real-time) — either return after the timer or alternate with the Mount Obsidian route.

Tips

• Use a Metal Pickaxe or better — lower-tier pickaxes reduce coal yield per swing.
• A Mining Pal in your active party with high Mining suitability can mine alongside you, doubling speed.
• Equip Desert-resistant gear if available — the desert biome causes minor heat damage without it.
• Pick up any Ore nodes you see alongside coal — Refined Ingots require both Coal and Ore, so stock both simultaneously.
• The route respawn timer means you can cycle between Desert and Mount Obsidian routes to maintain continuous mining.

Setting Up Automated Coal Production

The Coal Mine is a buildable structure that generates coal passively when Mining Pals are assigned to it, similar to how Stone Pit generates stone. Unlock the Coal Mine in the Technology Tree at around Level 30+ and place it at a base in the desert or volcanic biome (bases can be established anywhere on the map — not just the starting region).

For maximum automated coal production, assign Tombat (Mining Lv 3) or Anubis (Mining Lv 3) to the Coal Mine. A Level 3 Mining Pal generates coal approximately twice as fast as a Level 1 or Level 2 Pal. Run two Mining Pals on the Coal Mine simultaneously if your base slot capacity allows — the stations support multiple concurrent workers.

Consider establishing a secondary base specifically in a resource-rich area for automated coal extraction. A forward base in the desert or volcanic biome with Coal Mine structures and high-level Mining Pals creates a passive coal income even when you're away from that base. Set up a Palbox, Feed Box, and beds at the secondary base to keep your Pals fed and functional.

Best Mining Pals for Coal Automation

• Anubis (Mining Lv 3): Best overall mining Pal — also has Handiwork Lv 4. Assign to Coal Mine for fastest automated coal production.
• Tombat (Mining Lv 3): Dedicated mining specialist available before Anubis in the game's progression. Strong coal production rate.
• Digtoise (Mining Lv 3): Ground-type with Mining Lv 3; available in desert biome — thematically fitting for desert coal farming.
• Blazamut (Mining Lv 4): Rare volcanic Pal with highest Mining suitability in the game. Assign to a volcanic biome base for maximum coal output.
• Cattiva (Mining Lv 1): Early-game fallback — Mining Lv 1 is slow but better than no mining Pal. Replace with Tombat or Anubis as soon as available.
• Avoid Pals without Mining suitability — they contribute nothing to the Coal Mine regardless of level.

What Coal Is Used For

Coal's primary use is crafting Refined Ingots at the Blast Furnace. Each Refined Ingot requires 2 Coal + 2 Ore — a 1:1 coal-to-ore ratio by ingredient. Refined Ingots are the prerequisite material for most mid-to-late game weapons, armor, and structures. The demand for Refined Ingots scales sharply as you advance — what feels like a large coal stockpile early game depletes quickly in the crafting phase.

Coal also appears in crafting recipes for Carbon Fiber, Circuit Boards (with Coal as a component in the production chain), and some specialized ammunition types. Carbon Fiber is required for late-game assault rifles and other advanced weapons — it becomes a significant coal sink at endgame.

Establish automated coal production before you heavily start crafting mid-game equipment. Running out of coal when you need Refined Ingots stalls your entire progression. A target of 200+ coal in storage before beginning a major crafting push ensures you don't run dry mid-production.
