Mining in Winter — The Optimal Skill Grind

With no crops to water, Winter gives you full days to spend in the Mines or Skull Cavern without the guilt of neglecting farm duties. Push your Mines progress to Floor 120 if you haven't already — Floor 120 yields the Skull Key, which opens Skull Cavern in the Desert. The Mines also have a Winter-specific monster distribution that makes certain floors feel different seasonally.

Skull Cavern is the best gold-making activity in Winter for mid-to-late game players. On lucky days (check Fortune Teller TV), run Skull Cavern as deep as possible — Floor 50+ starts yielding substantial Iridium Ore. Use Winter to stockpile 20+ Iridium Bars needed for Iridium Sprinklers (1 Gold Bar + 1 Iridium Bar + 1 Battery Pack each). A full farm of Iridium Sprinklers transforms Year 2 farming efficiency dramatically.

The Mines also yield Geodes, which Clint cracks for 25g each. Geodes contain minerals for Community Center bundles (Earth Crystal, Frozen Tear, Quartz, Fire Quartz) and gems worth 50–250g. Crack all accumulated Geodes from Fall during Winter to both earn gold and complete museum donations.

Winter Foraging Items and Locations

  • Holly — found in forests and farm paths. Gives +20 friendship if gifted to most NPCs (or sell for 80g).
  • Crystal Fruit — found on farm and in forest. Sells for 150g raw; Crystal Fruit Jelly is 350g in a Preserves Jar.
  • Crocus — found on farm paths and forest. Sells for 60g; Penny likes Crocus (+45 friendship).
  • Snow Yam — dug up from Artifact Spots (worm patches) in Winter. Sells for 100g; required for some NPC gift preferences.
  • Nautilus Shell — found on the beach in Winter foraging. Required for the Crab Pot Community Center bundle if you haven't completed it.
  • Winter Root — dug up from farm Artifact Spots. Sells for 70g; Roots Platter recipe uses Winter Root + Cave Carrot.
  • All Winter Foraging items count for the Winter Foraging Community Center bundle — gather at least one of each.

Fishing in Winter

Winter has unique fish that are only available this season: Squid (ocean at night, 80g), Lingcod (river, any time, 120g), Tiger Trout (river, 6 AM–7 PM, 150g — rare), and Midnight Carp (all water at night, 150g). The Night Market submarine ride (Winter 15–17) is the only place to catch Spook Fish (150g), which is required for the Specialty Fish Community Center bundle.

Fishing during Winter is excellent for leveling the Fishing skill if it's below Level 10. The slower pace of Winter (no crops competing for your morning time) allows long dedicated fishing sessions. Combine fishing at the Beach with Beach foraging on the same trip — you'll collect Nautilus Shell and other winter forage while walking to and from your fishing spot.

Crab Pots work in Winter and are a passive income source. Set them up in both ocean and freshwater (river/lake) areas, then collect every morning before other activities. With the Trapper profession, Crab Pots don't require Bait. A row of 10+ Crab Pots provides 200–600g daily with no active effort.

Tool Upgrades — Best Time to Upgrade

Upgrading a tool at Clint's Blacksmith takes 2 in-game days. During crop seasons, losing your Watering Can for 2 days means crops die — a disaster. In Winter, you have no crops to water, making it the ideal time to upgrade tools without consequences. Use Winter to upgrade your Watering Can, Hoe, and Axe to their highest tier you can afford.

Priority order for upgrades: Watering Can first (most impactful — higher tiers water larger areas), then Axe (iridium chops Large Logs and stumps in one hit for Hardwood), then Hoe (gold+ tier covers a wide row for efficient tilling), then Pickaxe (iridium breaks most rocks and boulders in one hit). Each upgrade level costs: Copper (2,000g + 5 bars), Iron (5,000g + 5 bars), Gold (10,000g + 5 bars), Iridium (25,000g + 5 bars).

If you can only afford one upgrade this Winter, make it the Iridium Watering Can. It waters a 3×6 area in a single swing, dramatically cutting farm watering time even before sprinklers are placed everywhere. Many players pair this upgrade with building additional Iridium Sprinklers during Winter so Spring Year 2 needs almost no manual watering at all.

Frequently asked questions

Can you grow any crops in Winter?

No crops grow outdoors in Winter. However, crops planted in the Greenhouse continue to grow year-round. Some indoor plants like Coffee Beans in the greenhouse are not affected by Winter. Pots inside the farmhouse can grow some crops as well.

What foraging items can I find in Winter?

Winter foraging items include Holly, Crystal Fruit, Crocus, Nautilus Shell, Snow Yam, and Winter Root. These appear on beach tiles, farm paths, forest floors, and Artifact Spots. All are needed for the Winter Foraging Community Center bundle.

Is Winter the best time to upgrade tools?

Yes — upgrading tools takes 2 days during which the tool is unavailable. In Winter, there are no crops to water or farm tasks requiring those tools, making it the safest upgrade window without losing productivity.

What fish are exclusive to Winter?

Winter-exclusive fish include Squid (ocean at night), Lingcod (river), Tiger Trout (river), Midnight Carp (all water at night), and Spook Fish (Night Market submarine only, Winter 15–17).

What happens at the Night Market?

The Night Market runs on Winter 15, 16, and 17 on the beach. It features special vendors selling rare items, a submarine ride for fishing (Spook Fish only available here), and a mermaid show. Visit all three nights for maximum items and the Spook Fish Community Center bundle catch.
