Nightfarer Ability Upgrades — The Core Progression System

The primary permanent progression system in Nightreign is the Nightfarer ability upgrade tree. Each Nightfarer has a set of passive improvements, active ability upgrades, and starting stat boosts that unlock permanently as you complete Expeditions with that character. These upgrades are the main reason repeated Expeditions with the same Nightfarer become progressively easier — your character starts each run slightly stronger than they did before.

Upgrades are earned through completing Expeditions (defeating Night Bosses and ultimately the Nightlord), with bonus upgrades for first-time completions of specific content (first Nightlord clear, first completion on increased difficulty). The upgrade tree is specific to each Nightfarer — Guardian upgrades don't transfer to Wylder or Duchessa. Players who focus on a single Nightfarer will master that character's kit significantly faster than those who spread play time across all Nightfarers.

Some Nightfarer upgrades affect starting conditions directly — earlier access to higher rune level starting points, additional starting Flask charges, or bonus starting gold for Day 1 equipment purchases. These starting bonuses compound across the Expedition, as beginning Day 1 stronger means more efficient resource gathering which means better power for Night 2 and the Nightlord.

Relic Discovery Persistence

Relics are the in-run power-up items that drop from enemies, bosses, and field camps during an Expedition. When you discover a relic type for the first time, that relic is permanently added to your active relic drop pool. In subsequent Expeditions, this relic has a chance to appear as a drop — relics that aren't in your discovery pool cannot appear at all.

This system creates a compelling incentive to play through many Expeditions — the more relic types you discover, the richer and more powerful your relic pool becomes. A player who has discovered 50 relic types has access to a much more powerful average drop from any given enemy compared to a new player whose pool contains only 10 types. Early Expeditions are naturally about expanding your relic discovery count as efficiently as possible.

Some relics are restricted to specific discovery conditions — only dropping from specific boss types, during specific Expedition difficulty tiers, or after specific Nightfarer progression milestones. This means exploring different content (different Night Bosses, different Nightlords, higher difficulties) directly expands your available relic options in ways that grinding the same content repeatedly does not.

Most Efficient Permanent Progression Strategies

  • Focus on one Nightfarer per week: Concentrated Expedition runs with the same character unlock their ability tree faster and builds mastery of that character's playstyle simultaneously.
  • Prioritize first-time content completion: First Nightlord kills, first clears of new difficulty tiers, and first clears with each Nightfarer all provide elevated permanent rewards compared to repeat completions.
  • Complete Night 1 and Night 2 bosses even on failed Expeditions: Permanent rewards are granted incrementally — killing Night 1 boss gives a reward even if the run fails at Night 2. Every boss kill contributes to progression regardless of Expedition outcome.
  • Play with varied co-op partners: Different player compositions in co-op can create different relic drop conditions that you wouldn't trigger in solo play, expanding your relic discovery pool faster.
  • Don't skip Field Bosses in Day phases: Field Bosses on Days 1–3 are a major source of rare relic discoveries in addition to in-run power. Systematically clearing field bosses each day is both good relic scouting and permanent progression investment.

Unlocking New Content and Expedition Variants

Beyond Nightfarer upgrades, permanent progression also gates access to new content. Defeating the Nightlord for the first time unlocks access to Expedition difficulty variants — harder versions of the Expedition format that provide better permanent rewards at the cost of more challenging Night Bosses and Nightlords. These difficulty variants are permanent unlocks shared across all Nightfarers on your account.

New Nightlord types may unlock after defeating existing Nightlords a certain number of times or meeting specific conditions during Expeditions. The full unlock conditions for all Nightlords are not completely documented at time of writing, but completing Expeditions consistently with varied team compositions appears to accelerate Nightlord pool expansion.

Some cosmetic rewards are locked behind specific achievement conditions — completing an Expedition with a specific Nightfarer under 45 minutes, completing Nightlord fights without using any Sacred Flask charges, etc. These are purely cosmetic and don't affect gameplay effectiveness, but they provide long-term goals for dedicated players.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Sacred Flask count increase permanently?

Yes, your base Sacred Flask charge count can be permanently increased through Nightfarer progression upgrades. These upgrades are separate from the in-run Flask charge increases you find during Expeditions (which reset). Starting with more Sacred Flask charges means you enter Night 1 with more healing resources, which compounds into better performance across the entire Expedition.

If I play multiple Nightfarers, do I have to unlock progression separately for each?

Yes. Nightfarer ability upgrades are character-specific — Guardian upgrades don't apply to Wylder, and vice versa. However, account-wide content unlocks (new Nightlord types, difficulty variants, relic discoveries) are shared across all Nightfarers. The more content you unlock with one Nightfarer, the more of that content becomes available when you eventually play other Nightfarers.

Is there a maximum permanent power level?

Each Nightfarer has a finite ability upgrade tree that eventually caps out at maximum. Once all upgrades for a Nightfarer are unlocked, that character's permanent progression is complete. The number of upgrades in each tree and the exact cap values have not been fully documented at time of writing — community resources tracking upgrade trees will provide more specific numbers as players fully unlock them.

Do co-op partners need to have the same permanent upgrades?

No. Each player's permanent upgrades apply only to their own Nightfarer character. You can co-op with players at any progression level — a fully upgraded Guardian can play alongside a Guardian who has just started their upgrade tree. The main impact is that underpowered players contribute less effective performance, but the Radiant Ward ability itself is not gated behind progression (it's a base ability).

What happens to relics I find in a run but don't pick up?

Relics that appear in an Expedition but are not collected by any player still count toward your relic discovery pool as long as the item was generated and visible. Simply seeing a relic in the field (even without collecting it) is sufficient to unlock that relic type for future Expeditions. This makes exploration itself valuable even when you can't carry all drops.
