Stardust Armor — The Core of the Build

Stardust Armor is the endgame summoner armor, crafted from Stardust Fragments (dropped by the Stardust Pillar during the Celestial Pillars event). The full set requires 36 Stardust Fragments and provides: +66% minion damage, +5 maximum minion capacity, and the unique Stardust Guardian — a persistent guardian sentinel that defends you independently of your regular minions.

The Stardust Guardian is not a controllable minion — it automatically attacks enemies near you. It cannot be dismissed or redirected, but it provides constant background DPS without consuming a minion slot. The Guardian scales with your overall summoner stats.

The set bonus is activated by left-clicking, which teleports the Stardust Guardian to your cursor. This lets you direct the Guardian's aggressive phase toward specific targets, making it a pseudo-controllable turret despite its auto-attack default behavior.

Stardust Dragon vs Terraprisma — Which Minion to Use?

PropertyStardust Dragon StaffTerraprisma
How to GetCraft from 18 Stardust Fragments at Ancient ManipulatorDropped by Empress of Light killed in a single daytime (all damage must be during daytime)
Minion TypeDragon segments — grows longer with each additional summon slot usedFloating sword — fires rapid sword projectiles at a single target
Damage PatternHigh AoE — the longer dragon body hits multiple enemies simultaneously; overlapping segments deal massive total DPSVery high single-target — the fastest-attacking minion in the game
Synergy With Minion SlotsExtremely high — each additional slot makes the Dragon body longer, dramatically increasing DPSDoes not scale with slot count — each Terraprisma summon is independent
Best AgainstBosses with large hitboxes (Moon Lord, large segments), dense enemy groupsSingle-target bosses, Moon Lord True Eyes (small targets)
Ease of AcquisitionStraightforward — craft from Pillar fragmentsVery difficult — requires daytime Empress of Light kill (she one-shots you in daytime)
Overall RecommendationBest for general endgame use — highest total DPS in most scenariosBest-in-slot for Moon Lord True Eye of Cthulhu phase and specific boss fights

Verdict: The Stardust Dragon Staff is the better general-purpose endgame minion due to its dramatic scaling with minion slot count. With 8–10 minion slots, the Dragon's total DPS massively exceeds the Terraprisma. The Terraprisma excels in very specific situations (fast single-target precision) and is worth having as a secondary option, but the Dragon is your primary endgame summon.

Whip Mechanics — Empowerment and Tag System

Whips are the summoner's primary offensive tool and support mechanism. Unlike other class weapons, whips do not deal the bulk of summoner damage — instead, they apply the Tag debuff to enemies, causing your minions to focus fire on that target and deal bonus damage to it.

The Empowerment mechanic (introduced in the 1.4 update) triggers when a whip kills an enemy — killing blow grants a temporary Empowerment buff that increases your minions' damage for several seconds. Chaining whip kills keeps the Empowerment buff running continuously, creating a powerful feedback loop.

Different whips have different tag effects. The Firecracker (crafted from 12 Bone Whips + 5 Hellstone Bars) makes minions deal explosive AoE damage to tagged enemies. The Dark Harvest (Halloween seasonal drop) applies a powerful Empowerment that boosts minion damage significantly. The Morning Star and Kaleidoscope are the highest-damage whips for direct use.

The optimal whip rotation is: tag a high-health enemy with Firecracker (for minion AoE bonus), maintain Empowerment by killing nearby smaller enemies with Dark Harvest or Morning Star, and let your Dragon minion handle the tagged primary target with bonus damage from both the tag and your active Empowerment buffs.

Maximizing Minion Count — Every Slot Source

  • Stardust Armor full set: +5 minion capacity (bringing base from 1 to 6).
  • Papyrus Scarab (Hercules Beetle + Necromantic Scroll): +1 minion capacity, +15% minion damage.
  • Necromantic Scroll (Trophy Book from Dungeon): +1 minion capacity, +10% minion damage.
  • Pygmy Necklace (Witch Doctor, costs 20g): +1 minion capacity.
  • Summoning Potion (Bottled Water + Variegated Lardfish + Moonglow): +1 temporary minion.
  • Bewitching Table (found in Dungeons): +1 temporary minion (station buff, click to apply).
  • Total with all sources: 6 (armor) + 1 (Papyrus) + 1 (Necromantic, if not using Papyrus) + 1 (Pygmy Necklace) + 1 (Potion) + 1 (Bewitching) = up to 11 simultaneous minion summons.
  • Stardust Dragon at 10 slots: The Dragon body has 10 segments, each dealing damage separately. A 10-segment Dragon hits bosses for enormous DPS, potentially exceeding any other weapon in the game on large-hitbox targets.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Stardust Dragon minion kill Moon Lord?

Yes. At full minion count (10+ segments), the Stardust Dragon deals enormous DPS to Moon Lord's large body and hands. Position the Dragon on Moon Lord's core and keep Empowerment active via whip kills on Phantasmal Eyes. The Dragon is considered one of the top DPS options against Moon Lord in the endgame.

What is the total minion count achievable in endgame?

With Stardust Armor (+5), Papyrus Scarab (+1), Pygmy Necklace (+1), Summoning Potion (+1), and Bewitching Table (+1), you reach 9–11 total minion slots depending on your accessory configuration. Each slot summons one more Dragon segment, dramatically increasing DPS. Maximizing minion count is the primary goal of the endgame summoner build.

What whip should I use first for the summoner build?

The Spinal Tap (crafted early from Vertebrae in Crimson) or Leather Whip (from the Goblin Tinkerer) are early whip options. Progress through whips in tier order: Spinal Tap → Firecracker (Hardmode) → Durendal (Plantera era) → Morning Star or Kaleidoscope (post-Plantera/Golem) → Dark Harvest (Halloween seasonal). Each tier provides significantly better tag damage and Empowerment effects.

Is summoner viable for all bosses in Terraria?

Yes, though it requires different strategies than melee or ranged. Summoner has weaker armor (taking more damage on hits) but excellent sustained DPS through minions and good Empowerment uptime. The main challenge is survival — summoners must be especially good at dodging. Stardust Armor partially addresses this with its Guardian, but the class remains glass-cannon oriented.

What accessories should I reforge for summoner?

Menacing (+4% damage per accessory) is the standard recommendation for endgame summoners who want maximum DPS. Warding (+4 defense per accessory) is an alternative for players struggling with survivability. With 6 Menacing accessories, you gain +24% summon damage — a significant boost to Dragon DPS at endgame minion counts.
